Lake Whitney on the Brazos in North Central Texas proves sturdy under heavy fishing pressure. The 50 000 surface acre reservoir lies between Waco and the Dallas Fort Worth area and is used year round. Construction by the U S Corps of Engineers ran from 1947 to 1953 at about 40 million dollars. The dam spans 17 695 feet and rises 159 feet with a highway crossing between Whitney and Clifton and points east.

The impoundment on the Brazos below Possum Kingdom supports big bass and year round fishing on cloudless days or foul weather with 24 hour barges and seasonal waterfowl hunting and deer nearby.
