Wax Camps in Big Bend Spotlight Curious Local Industry

In the Big Bend region, wax camps harvest candelilla wax from desert plants. Workers, many Mexican nationals, boil the weed in vats, extract wax, and load chunks onto burros for sale to buyers in Alpine and Marfa. The operation exists with minimal infrastructure and occasional Border Patrol scrutiny.

Llano Granite Still In Demand

Llano granite from Texas remains sought after as the industry peaks in 1950 with 40 ton mass shipments and a monumental move to Austin. Quarried since 1888, the Pink stone powered a Rangers Monument base and spurred a granite boom despite higher costs and a shift to cheaper sources. Advances in machinery and wider capital raise hope for renewed demand.

Granite Industry in Lianna A Century of Stone Trade

The Lianna granite story traces early quarries and Frank Teich works established in 1900. Pioneers like David Stewart and Blodgett launched polishing and transport advances, with F M Cassady moving granite by road. By 1945 the trade declined, yet deep stone and limited quarries remain, keeping Lianna among few U S sites with commercial granite.
