Texas Track and Field Faces National Prominence Shortfall
Texas colleges again failed to make a national impact in NCAA meets despite some strong showings. SMU’s Hed not Dexter Elkins and Rice’s Fred Hansen led vaulters, while Houston produced the lone NCAA first as Pat Hihessy triumphed in the three mile. Critics blame early Texas spring terms and limited post college competition for the lack of a "name" star to carry the state’s track profile.
