Nostalgia fills Brady as Brady Lake hosts a booming Jubilee week end with crowds and many visitors. The writer recalls starting as a reporter in 1928 and covering the first Jubilee with horse racing boating public events and reunions. Continued on page 6.
Don Trull manager of 100 000 Auto Parts was elected president of the Brady Fire Department at its regular meeting Tuesday night. Trull, a Coleman County native and Brady resident for four years, has served as a member for two years. Officers named included Les Tybo vice president Jesse McAnally secretary Lewis Hampton treasurer Howard Salter chief Joe McAnally assistant chief Buzz Wetzel recorder Harold Owens tail twister Mrs S P Tomlinson mother Lisa Tybo sweetheart Chris Adams mascot Rev Ed Haffner chaplain Dr Kenneth Hudspeth doctor Team captains were S P Tomlinson No 1 and Bob Adams No 2.
Hettie Fae George was sworn in by County Attorney J W Hughes as McCulloch County Judge at 4 p m Tuesday to fill the vacancy caused by her husband’s death. The ceremony drew friends courthouse workers and her Austin based son and his family. She is a Santa Anna High School graduate and Daniel Baker College alumna who taught in Coleman and Brady and last year at Lohn. She serves in church and hospital auxiliary groups.
Ana Belle Squiers of Brady died at 8 50 p m Tuesday at Heart of Texas Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held Thursday at Wilkerson Memorial Chapel with Rev. John Poe. Burial followed in Placid Cemetery. She was born November 27 1899 in Roseburg Oregon and married John W Squiers July 1 1916 in Placid. She was a housewife and United Pentecostal Church member. Survivors include her husband six daughters five sons 47 grandchildren and 47 great grandchildren.
Brady Independent School District trustees will meet in regular session on Tuesday evening July 8 instead of the usual second Monday. Superintendent Carroll Tatom will attend the Summer Convention in Austin July 14-16, co sponsored by the Texas Education Agency and the Texas Association of School Administrators, at the University of Texas.
Brady City Council passes a building code amendment requiring lowest floor grade be eight inches above adjacent curb before permit. Spence approved to tie into sewer on U S 87 South after grading and surveying at his expense. 15th Street sewer project ready to start when funds available. Golf tournament requested and approved for July 12 with 72 players at four dollars. Council limits future Heart O Texas Golf meets to approved dates. Other actions include denials of windmill and trailer housing, airport repair progress, park keeper hospital status, memorial to Judge Roger George, and potential Youth Program help.
Parade chairman Jerome Wilkerson announced a record length for the July Jubilee parade with about 80 entries signed up and more expected. Grand marshal is Harry Holt of KRBC-TV Abilene, with Sen. Grant Jones and Armer S. Barwood as grand honorees.
Charles A. Brewster former Brady High School basketball coach has been elected superintendent of the Lohn Schools effective July 1. He led Brady with 168 wins and 69 losses in eight years and held multiple coaching roles across Brady May and New Home. Brewster is a Blanket High School valedictorian who studied at Texas and Howard Payne University and earned a master’s in education from Sam Houston.
Three full days of horse racing headline the July Jubilee at G Rollie White Downs from July 4 to 6. About 300 horses are stabled as Parker Pumphrey Jubilee president confirms events include quarter horses and thoroughbreds, with a Summer Futurity carrying around a $20 000 purse. Post time is 2 p m daily with events Friday Saturday and Sunday featuring mixed disciplines and a AQHA recognized day.
