Jim Harkrider 60 lifelong Brady and McCulloch County resident died at Parkland Hospital Dallas after a month long illness following a heart attack at Love Field before Christmas. Funeral 4 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church with burial at Rest Haven Cemetery. He worked as a rancher and oil businessman with his brother Herbert.
Mr Harkrider, active First United Methodist Church board member, Mason and Shriner, opened the Buyrite Shoe Store in Brady. Survivors include a wife, four daughters, a brother, two sisters, and six grandchildren. The Kimble Menard County Singing Convention will meet Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Hext Baptist Church. Public invited.
Severe icy weather kept a quorum from the January 10 session of the Mohair Council of America. The annual membership meeting is rescheduled to 10 am on Wednesday January 31 at the Hotel Cactus in San Angelo.
Noel Fry of Del Rio urges every mohair grower to attend the council meeting to direct activities and oversee grower funds spent on advertising promotion publicity and new market development programs. Fry emphasizes that the money comes from growers and their involvement matters.
Brady Chamber of Commerce announces rules for the Distinguished Service Award nominations. Nominations in writing due by March 1 with detailed background. committee chosen by the chamber president will decide in secret. Public officials may be considered if their record benefits the community. award presented April 12 at the annual meeting.
The United Way board adopted a 1973 budget totaling 11944.50 and 106 percent of the 1972 goal. Funds raised will support Texas Medical Research McCulloch County School for Handicapped Boy Scouts Salvation Army Ossett McCulloch County Youth West Texas Rehabilitation Center Red Cross Bloodmobile Chamber of Commerce Southwest Texas Diabetic Foundation Emergency Fund and other community services. Officers and seven new directors will be elected at the February meeting with nominations led by Mrs Lyndon Myrick Mrs Bill Ricks Steve Black Elbert Boswell and David Bishop.
Commissioners Court discussed closing the open ends of the Richards Park show barn. County Judge Roger George to advertise the request. The court also approved continuing $100 monthly for a night dispatcher. Budget actions included soil conservation, a six month depository bid, and reappointment of Veteran's Service Agent Joe Ogden.
The Concho Valley Council of Governments Health Advisory Committee will meet at 7 30 pm Thursday January 18 in the St Angelus Room of Central National Bank in San Angelo. Albert McCulloh of Brady and James R Wilkinson are among the 24 members.
