Machines Cut Cotton Harvest Cost Says Specialist

Extension Service cotton work specialist Fred C. Ebbitt of Elliott says machines save 15 to 20 dollars per bale versus hand picking, prompting many growers to switch to mechanical pickers and strippers. Last year nearly one third of Texas cotton was harvest mechanically with 15,088 mechanical strippers in 180 counties and 1,557 spindle pickers in 83 counties. Now is the time to consider planting decisions.

Elliott's planting plan for stripper-harvested cotton

Elliott recommends planting cotton in 40 inch rows for stripper harvesting, with two to six plants per foot based on soil fertility and moisture. Aim for uniform plant spacing and even raw width, space row middles lower than ridges, and use tractor shields to protect plants during insect control, defoliation, and stripping. Proper driving speed and machine settings improve harvest efficiency.
