Brady, Texas residents claim Scott Appleton and June Benefield are making a name in Houston. Town pride surges as locals boast about their sizes and ambitions with the two young figures entering the city’s scene.
Brady toped San Saba 101 to 45 in a thriller as Bubba Harris blocked a late shot and drew a free throw. Harris led Brady with 28 points while Greg Chase added 25 and Harold Anderson 3 as Brady moved to 7 2 in District 18 AA.
County Tax Assessor John Guice announces free poll taxes for federal elections, available to eligible residents 22 to 60 who meet state residency rules. The certificate, stamped Poll Tax Not Paid, covers only presidential and U S Senate and Congressman races, not state or local offices, and must be secured by March 4.
Eighteen to twenty bands are expected at the Heart O Texas Band Festival held Friday and Saturday March 6-7. Participating groups include Weatherford Breckenridge Fredericksburg Junior and Senior Highs Cross Plains Rising Star Del Rio Tivy High Mason Junior and Senior Robert Lee Junior High Junction Lincoln Junior High Abilene Gorman Menard and Coleman. Brady’s Junior and Senior Bands also join. The event opens 8 p.m. March 6 with a marching contest in Bulldog Stadium.
The Brady High School Bulldog Band leaves at 9 a.m. Friday by bus and cars for Del Rio to take part in all phases of the Del Rio Band Festival. Director James Mallow says festivity events start Friday night with marching contests and end Saturday night with an all-star band concert at Del Rio High School. Many parents will accompany the band and stay at the Roswell Hotel, with the group returning to Brady around 5 p.m. Sunday.
Two people minor injuries after a car sideswiped three parked vehicles at Poe and Shipman Service Station on U S 87 near San Angelo about 11:55 p m last Friday. Driver Billy Ray Dotson 25 of Brady treated and released. passenger Mrs Dorothy Nell Bankston of Fort Worth sustained facial cuts and bruises. Dotson struck a Ford sedan and then his own parked car, pushing into a pickup. total damage about 1300 dollars.
Mrs. M. F. Lohn hosted an open house at 405 South China Street to mark her 90th birthday. More than 50 relatives and friends attended, including six children and siblings, with decorations of gladiolas and roses. Born February 11, 1874 in Flintville Tennessee as Sarah Elizabeth Bray, she moved to Texas in 1875 and later settled near Lohn and Waldrip.
Mrs. Cora E. Powell of Menard advises a home remedy for quitting smoking using equal parts apple cider vinegar and honey as a gargle. Do not swallow heavily. she also notes it helps a sore throat.
A welcome shower graced Brady and surrounding areas on Wednesday night with an official reading of 2.2 inches, topping the county’s average rainfall in most locales. The wider McCulloch County area saw above average totals from the event.
Dick Bond transfers from Kimbell-Brady to Waco as store manager. Ed Blacklock will succeed him in Brady, returning to the local Kimbell-Brady role. Blacklock, a Del Rio veteran, calls Brady home with wife Doris Sanders and two children. The Bonds plan to move next week to Waco.
KTBC Austin and KRBC Abilene San Angelo filmed McCulloch County spots during Scott Appleton Day events. Crew shot at Tomy Brook Ranch Masonic Lodge Camp San Saba Brady Lake Plateau Motel McCulloch Co op Appleton visit Lions Club farms and industry sites. More than 1000 feet of film will air on Abilene and Austin new programs over weeks and months.
The Kimble Menard Singing Convention will meet Sunday February 16 at Roosevelt Presbyterian Church. The program will begin at 2 p m.
Abilene architect Dan Boone presented initial drawings for Brady High School expansion to fit a long range program. The plan adds an administration office and home economics building on the north side and reserves space for a future auditorium between the main building and the agriculture shop. The current rooms are praised as solid and ready for 19 more years with maintenance.
The Melvin FFA Chapter will hold its 22nd annual Stock Show Friday on the Melvin football field. Judging begins at 2 15 p m. Melvin a teacher who directs the show said 4 H Club members in the Melvin school district are invited to show as in the past. Lewis Bridges Eden ag teacher will judge. Only lambs and hogs are entered this year.
Rochelle girls win the District 81 B championship 54 29 over Melvin at Rochelle ending with a 12 0 district and 20 1 season record. The team powered by guards Lynda Smith Karone Johnson Janet Lemke and forwards Patricia Nowlin Linda Cates Mary McDonald Carolyn Huffman.
