An editorial urges McCulloch County to keep graduates at home, noting Brady High School produced 314 graduates with 168 to college. Economists value each graduate at $165,000 in lifetime earnings of $268,000 for a college degree, arguing the community loses when youth must leave for opportunity.
The City Council instructed police to issue tickets for red meter violations after Mrs. Ida Sears the city parking officer was praised for her work. They said drivers abused her courtesy by leaving meters unpaid and ordered tickets once enforcement begins. Additional actions included officials attending training, a new sick leave policy, and staff changes in sanitation.
Set. Aubrey Barr transferred from Odessa to open a recruiting station in Brady basement of the Post Office. Barr and family moved to 1800 South High Street Brady on Wednesday. He has 19 years of Army service including Germany in World War III and Korea and will cover Mc Culloch Mason Menard Concho Lampasas Burnet and San Saba Counties.
James W. Criswell, county FHA supervisor, announced the Farmers Home Administration is accepting applications again under the roughage program. Applications may be filed through February 15 for a supply of roughage feed to carry basic livestock through March 15.
Mr and Mrs Tomas Sanchez of Sohn announce the birth of a daughter at Medical and Surgical Hospital on January 31.
The Rev and Mrs John Gilbert of Brady announce the birth of their son at Merical and Surgical Hospital on February 2. The Rev Mr Gilbert is pastor of Trinity Methodist Church.
Mrs A L Renfroe who has been hospitalized at the Clinic Hospital in San Angelo since last Thursday is reported to be improving. Her room number is 223.
Brady School Board approves a $10 seat option to secure reserved center seats for 10 years, with four entrances and a 24 row by 160 foot grandstand to be built by Central Texas Tron Works. The plan aims to raise about $5,000 from options and borrow the rest, with construction possibly beginning in May after football season.
County Agent Jimmy Cusenbary reports two new rabies cases in McCulloch County, one a fox in Mercury and one a cow in Melvin. Lab tests in Austin confirmed the disease, with warnings to vaccinate dogs, report strays, and destroy foxes and other varmints. E G Pope and a Predator Centre trapper plan visit to boost efforts.
The Brady District census of school age children taken in January shows 1,410 youngsters, two fewer than 1,412 in 1956. Fewer beginning students this year 115 versus 130. Superintendent C A Reynolds called the census better than expected.
Final tabulation shows 1,551 persons eligible to vote in Mc Culloch County this year, well below last year's 2,500. The outcome reflects the annual poll tax payments completed for voter qualification.
The board extended two year contracts for School Coordinator E. O. Martin and principals C. A. Ethridge high school A. H. Floyd junior high E. J. Powell South Ward Ira Pearson North Ward and renewed coaching contracts for C. D. York Ed Whiteley K. Y. Owens and Leonard Boyd. Dunbar principal A. L. Reed gets a one year extension. Betty Dixon named junior high girls physical education teacher replacing Dewey Lowe. Dixon is a Southern State College graduate from Magnolia Arkansas and previously taught at Port Lavaca Texas.
The March of Dimes program for Mercury Milburn Placid and Deep Creek communities was postponed from Saturday night due to conflicting school activities and illness across the areas.
The proposal details 10-year seat options priced at 10 dollars nonrefundable with transferability upon official notice. Options grant the right to buy Brady High School football season tickets for 10 years, with partial payments allowed and full payment by June 1, 1957. If tickets are not purchased by Sept 1 each year, seats may be sold to others.
The Brady High School Bulldog Band departs Friday for the Del Rio Band Festival. Events include a Friday night half-time show at Martin Memorial Field, a Saturday clinic from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., a 3 p.m. street parade, and an All-Star Concert in the high school auditorium. Twelve bands are listed, with Pecos, Alpin San Felipe, Kerrville, Del Rin, Eagle Pass, San Saba, Menard and more. The group returns home Sunday.
Joe Morrow of Melvin is named Knight of the York Cross of Honour the highest York Rite degree. He previously led Melvin Lodge as master in 1926 and held top offices in Brady Royal Arch Brady Council and Brady Commandery Knights Templar. A Texas Priory membership was confirmed January 25 with a certificate mailed to him. North America has 53 Priories and about 4800 members.
The transfer of deeds for buildings at Curtis Field to Intercontinental Manufacturing Company was delayed at the Tuesday City Council session. IMCO secretary I B Levinson of Dallas was absent due to a family illness.
Rochelle residents discuss a traveling group linked to the Williamson clan amid suspicions of swindles and fake painting jobs. Sheriff Luke Vogel and County Attorney Aubrey Davee questioned three brothers and families who arrived in Brady last Saturday with four flashy house trailers, TV antennas, and matching autos before leaving noon Thursday.
