Young Donald Kiesling dominated the 23rd Melvin FFA Stock Show winning the Fine Wool champion with his Fine Wool winner and taking reserve with his Fine Wool Cross first place.
Brenda Joyce Neve, senior daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Neve, received the Homemaker of the Year Award at Brady High School during a Tuesday assembly. She led a December home economics exam among 15 seniors and her paper advances for state and national judging. Donald Kiesling, son of Mr. and Mrs. Karl Kiesling, received the Lions Club trophy presented by T. Wood in memory of Mrs. Wood, with the Melvin Lions Club noting the show’s long dedication.
McCulloch County issued 1,550 poll taxes in an off election year, a modern record per County Tax Assessor John Guice. Last year about 2,000 were issued in a general election year, with 609 issued early last week before sales surged over the weekend. The assessor's office reopened Saturday as over 200 poll taxes were paid.
Laura Alice Latham 88 longtime Fredonia resident died Saturday in San Antonio. Services held Monday at Fredonia odist Church with burial in Deer Creek Cemetery. Survivors include son J S Latham and four daughters plus siblings and many grandchildren. Fossil: Wilkerson Funeral Home directed.
Thirteen adults took the General Education Development Test at Brady High School in 1964. Joe McDonough, the Brady High counselor, notes the program aids adults 21 or older seeking an equivalency certificate from the Texas Education Agency.
The City of Brady mourns the loss of its No. 1 citizen, known as Mr. Brady and Mr. Aggie. He dedicated much to Brady McCulloch County and to Texas A&M University, shaping the community and inspiring many.
Brady High School hosted the annual winter concert in an auditorium full house. Band director James Mallow praised the turnout as the largest since his tenure, with pieces like The Big Cage Trumpets Ole and Lawrence of Arabia delighting attendees. Senior Billie Jean Sellman named Band Sweetheart.
G Rollie White longtime Brady banker rancher and civic leader died at 1 30 am in Brady Hospital aged 89 after a long illness His funeral is set for 2 pm Wednesday at St Pauls Episcopal Church with burial in Live Oak Cemetery He led the Brady Chamber of Commerce the July Jubilee project and the Texas A&M University board of directors among many roles He moved to Brady in 1876 and built a lasting legacy in McCulloch County and Texas
Homer L. Bumguardner, 45, of Las Cruces New Mexico died January 26 in a Veterans Hospital after a long illness. Born June 24 1919 in Brady he served in World War II earning the EAME Campaign Medal with five Bronze Stars and the Occupation Medal of Germany. He is survived by his wife Angie two sons Nicholas and Jimmy his mother and four half siblings. Funeral services were held January 26 at Graham Mortuary Chapel with military honors and burial at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
The Harlem Showboats, world famous basketball team, face Prady AlickStars in Bulldog gym Saturday night at 8. The all-stars feature Stretch Redman Suitcase Shepard Bo Crain with clowns Pistol Pete McNeal and Cool Papa Wilson. Admission is 1 dollar for adults and 50 cents for children.
Funeral services for Mrs. A J Todd, 79, of San Saba were held at 2:30 p m Monday at First Methodist Church San Saba with burial in City Cemetery She died at 5:05 a m Sunday in San Saba Memorial Hospital She was born Addie Sue Mobley on July 9 1885 in Wilson County and married A J Todd on December 26 1904 Survivors include her husband four daughters three sons four sisters one brother sixteen grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren
The Brady High School stage band will play Thursday at 3 p.m. at the junior high for an assembly and Friday at 10:25 a.m. at Brady High during the newspaper assembly. The 10 to 15 minute program features popular music and is open to the public.
Rep. Terry Townsend of Brady is named to five Texas Legislature standing committees by Speaker Ben Barnes. Townsend will chair the Motor Traffic Committee and serve on Agriculture Banks and Banking Criminal Jurisprudence and State Affairs committees. Barnes notes the selection aims to place members where they can best serve the state and its people.
James Isbell and George Purcell attended the West Texas Chamber of Commerce directors meeting in Del Rio on January 28 29. About 100 officers and directors of the WTCC were present at the two day gathering hosted by Del Rio Chamber of Commerce manager Jack Stewart at the new Del Rio Civic Center.
Billy Allison Liverman a 25 year old Brady man was electrocuted Friday morning while stringing a telemetering circuit for the City of Killeen water pumping stations. The line on the ground was entangled by a truck and contacted a high voltage line. Lifesaving efforts failed. Liverman formerly of Brady was married to Elaine Barnes and leaves two young sons Todd Allen and Bobby Wade. He is survived by his mother and a brother in Arkansas and by his grandparents. Funeral services were held at Wilkerson Funeral Chapel with burial in Rest Haven Cemetery.
