A&M Extension Service Hires Ex-Lohn Man

Don Hall formerly of Lohn joins the Engineering Extension Service at Texas A&M College as an instructor in the communications technician training program. He will travel statewide to assist telephone cooperatives and independent staff in all aspects of operation from field construction to central office gear. Hall began as an apprentice lineman in 1947 and served four years in the U.S. Air Force as a radio repairman. He resides at 204 Highland in College Station.

Dale Watkins Ex-Pear Valley Farmer Dies at 50

Dale Watkins 50 former Lohn Pear Valley farmer died of a heart attack at 4 30 p m Tuesday at the Saragosa cotton gin near Balmorhea where he was gin manager. The body returned to Brady with services at Wilkerson Funeral Home and burial in Rest Haven Cemetery. Survivors include his wife Geneva Bowles two sons Ronnie and Dennis a daughter Mary Ellen and his mother plus a brother and five sisters all named in the notice.

Leah Ann Batterton 88 died at her home 807 South China at 12 45 p m Wednesday She was born May 2 1873 in Mississippi and lived in Brady since 1913 She married Baker Allen Batterton January 2 1892 He died in 1932 The Rev Charles Grimes will conduct her funeral at Wilkerson Chapel at 3 p m Friday Burial will be in Brady Cemetery Survivors include two sons Walter W and Ernest Batterton of Houston two daughters Mrs Roger Laughman of San Antonio and Mrs E J Mays of Brady and 24 grandchildren

Few Nominations for Service Award at Chamber Banquet

Only a small number of nominations have been received for the Distinguished Service Award to be presented at the annual membership banquet on April 12. Chamber Manager George Purcell says the response has been slow and nominations are due by March 1.

Brady Cagers Rout San Saba The Brady Bulldogs roll past San Saba 87 47 in district play

Brady hosts dominated San Saba 87 to 47 as the Bulldogs sweep with the B team 86 35 and the Pupettes 42 16. George Kidd led the boys with 28 points followed by Charles Reynolds 24. Mary Jo Trammell led the Pupettes with 15. The teams host Llano next, the last home district games of the season.

Screwworm Project Launches First Flies in Rio Grande Valley

The screwworm eradication program in Texas released sterile flies in the Rio Grande Valley as part of a $3 million voluntary fund drive led by the Southwest Animal Health Research Foundation. Texas stockmen have formed Foundation Committees in 220 of 254 counties, seeking support to keep screwworms from Texas and Mexico.

Poll tax collections in McCulloch County totaled 1 956 as the deadline passed Wednesday. Tax Assessor Collector John Guice called the total a pretty good record.

Brady election set for April 3 with mayoral and two alderman seats. John Rudder filed for mayor, while R M Priesmeyer seeks re election. Townsend Attacks Dismissal Of Texas Game Warden

State Rep. Terry Townsend of Brady criticized the Jan 11 dismissal of Bill Bennett a McCulloch County game warden. He presented a 450 signatory petition calling for Bennett’s reinstatement and praised him for stamping out one of Texas’s worst deer selling rings. Bennett is replaced in Brady by C. H. Swede Johnson.

All America Reynolds Heads to ACC Next Fall

Brady High quarterback Charles Reynolds, named to Sporting News High School All America honorable mention, will attend Abilene Christian College next fall. Reynolds led Brady to state finals as a sophomore and to semifinals last season, earning multiple school MVP honors and a strong academic record.

Frank Fields of Brady Dies

Frank Fields 79 of 300 South China Brady died 5 30 p m Tuesday in Brady Hospital. He was a longtime Brady resident and former manager of the Wilson Jordan Wool Warehouse for 15 years until 1957. He was born in 1883 in Tennessee and married Mattie Singleton in 1907. Funeral was held at 3 30 p m Wednesday at Wilkerson Chapel with burial in Rest Haven Cemetery. Survived by sons Paul and J D Fields of Brady daughters Mrs Marion Hendricks of Eden and Mrs Johnny Demasco of Brownwood three sisters Mrs Edna Akins of Melvin Mrs Eva Woods of Brownwood and Mrs Lenna Mann of Tennessee a brother Dennis Fields of Brady four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
