TMTA Drivers Back Drive Friendly Campaign For Safe Holidays
Texas Motor Transportation Association announces that over 900 member truck and bus operators will run with lights on Dec 20 through Jan 2 to promote the Drive Friendly safety program. TMTA president E. O. Gaylord urges all Texans to join in making this season the safest on Texas highways. Governor Preston Smith has been notified of the plan.

USSR Goat Buyers Renege On Sale To Russians
David Bratton’s goat sale to a Russian group collapsed as the buyers backed out citing drought. The goats remained with Bratton after delays from blue tongue concerns and were never shipped. Bratton’s son Lewis says the deal ended when the Russians refused to take the herd.

Traffic Victim Buried Wednesday
Mrs. Lilly Avis Swindall, 48, of Brownwood died in a pedestrian pickup crash on FM 42, 12 miles southwest of Brady at 8 p.m. Monday. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Joe Barekman. Services were held Wednesday at Mission Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Rest Haven Cemetery. Survivors include three sons Jerry, Scotty, and Jackie Swindall, two sisters, one brother, and two grandchildren.

Ricks Electric Appliance Shop Began With Few Dollar, Prayer
In January 1935 Eva Virginia and A J Ricks opened a small 13 by 20 foot store with seventy five dollars a used car a prayer and determination. The shop started as a radio and appliance service center with a few radios sold later expanding to other appliances. A J ran every role from service man to janitor while his wife handled the office and bookkeeping. The couple credits Brady and the trade area for support as they grew into a major Heart of Texas shopping center.

Orphans Feted At Christmas Party
Walnut Street Baptist Church minister Evans S Burleson hosted a Christmas party for 27 Cherokee Home for Children orphans aged 3 to 12 from Spanish descent in Brady. Music, prayers, gifts and a bus ride through town accompanied cookies and drinks as the group returned to four cottages housing about 50 children.

One-Cent Sales Tax Begins January First
The new one percent sales tax takes effect at 12:00 midnight December 31 to January 1, with state authority from Comptroller Robert S. Calvert. Merchants will need extra bookkeeping and new tax tables, as the tax applies to items previously taxed at four percent. The city notes copies of the tax table are being distributed and offices shut for the holiday weekend.

Bill Shaffer 69 of Brady died on arrival at Heart of Texas Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness. Funeral at Wilkerson Memorial Chapel with Rev. Grimes and Rev. Durst, burial in Rest Haven Cemetery. Born Jan 3 1902 in Comanche she lived in Brady since 1928 and was a homemaker and church member. Survivors include her husband a son three daughters two brothers two sisters and 12 grandchildren four great grandchildren.
