Interviews with Brady merchants show varied views on holiday sales. Some report gains over last year while others see declines. Clothing shops largely outpace 1968, and a department store manager notes brisk shopping starting after Thanksgiving with little slowdown and one more day of operation anticipated.
County School Superintendent J E Herrington will not seek re election in May primary, ending 31 years in office on December 31 1970 to devote time to a ranching operation. He recalls long service, notes saving teachers money with a ledger, and highlights district consolidations and census records. Santa arrives amid busy local Christmas shopping with strong year end sales across furniture drug and appliance stores.

Diehl home at 904 West Fourth Street captured first prize of 20 dollars in Brady Chamber of Commerce Christmas lighting contest. Second and third places went to E. J. Brock and Hilton Moore, while judges praised the growing number of entries and creative displays including moving Santa and space themes. Janet Gibbs and daughter arrived from Austin to spend Christmas with Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ogden.
Tom Green County chief jailer Joel A. Shipp resigned Tuesday to become chief deputy to McCulloch County Sheriff Luke Vogel. The post salary was raised 75 per month to match Tom Green County. Shipp’s resignation takes effect Dec 31 with duties starting Jan 1. his wife Paula Harmon Shipp also resigned as county jail matron. Shipp, a Vietnam veteran, served 14 months in Southeast Asia as a military policeman and attended the San Angelo Narcotics Investigation Seminar earning 32 hours toward certification. He is a Divide, Texas native and 26 years old. Attends funeral: Alf Coulson and wife attended Linn Davis’s funeral in Del Rio last weekend.
Three young people were arrested in a November 24 drug possession case in McCulloch County. Charles L. Crawley of Big Spring could not meet a 20000 dollar bond and remains jailed over the holiday. The other suspects posted bond. Crawley’s mother and sister visited with Christmas gifts, and his father serves in the armed forces.
Brownwood jail escapee Billy Wayne Sewell 21 of San Saba was captured in Big Spring by a Department of Public Safety Patrolman without resistance. Sewell fled the Coleman jail Monday afternoon after stealing a car and eluding a 100 man manhunt across multiple West Texas counties. He was convicted of rape in 1969 and given a 99 year sentence.
