The McCulloch County Community Chest faces a shortfall of about $2,000 from its $14,197 goal as campaign chairman Ramond Filensky reports total contributions at $12,000. Donations and pledges are urged and mailed through Wilensky. The campaign will close after a directors meeting.
Proposal to fund Brady Lake and flood defenses aims to end repeat floods that crippled the courthouse and square during the city’s worst flood on a July Saturday. Engineers from Brady and the Soil Conservation Service back the plan, arguing near total protection against future inundation.
Brady residents prepare to vote on a $1,485,000 lake project to protect floodplain trade and attract industry. The initiative, backed by city leaders and the Soil Conservation Service, would raise water rates above 4,990 gallons and finance a $2.535 million lake three miles west of Brady on Brady Creek, with FHA bond support at 2.63 percent.
The county sponsors a citizenship class for American aliens with 24 adults enrolled. Classes meet Wednesdays at 7 o'clock in a building at 10th and Willow Streets to prepare for the U S citizenship exam. Judge Love Imbrough notes the aim to integrate residents who live and vote locally. County costs are $3.15 so far with Daniel Sanchez guiding the class.
The First Baptist Church adult choir directed by George Arener presents "The Choir of Bethlehem" this Sunday at 7 pm. A 30 member robed chorus with solos and a Bethlehem scene will perform with Mrs Leycester Moore directing and Mrs Hilma Stock on organ.
Open house will be held Saturday afternoon to show the new Plateau Motel on South Bridge Street at the Menard Mason highway intersection. Billy Jack Neal built it. Laura Sayles will manage after 17 years with Carlson's Cleaners. The 18 unit L shaped motel features a heated pool, playground, 540 by 255 foot plot, future expansion, and in each unit telephone and television.
Generous residents respond to an appeal for an elderly Latin-American couple left without support. Miss Arvie Werner of the State Department of Public Welfare says the couple is cared for until permanent help arrives and warns of ongoing winter requests. A county clothing store will distribute warm clothing, shoes, and bedding, with donations left at Miss Wegner’s office, 319 West Main.
Rochelle post office will be open Saturday afternoon for patrons who wish to mail letters and packages. Postmaster Leon Lee notes the expanded hours to improve service and convenience.
Brady High coach K Y Owens announced plans for a ninth grade football team and schedule next year to match the school’s three basketball squads. He urged freshmen to participate each year as they move to high school, during the Junior High Lions’ football banquet at the Country Club ballroom.
Time is growing short for McCulloch County children to write to Santa Claus. The Brady Post Office has a special mailbox in the lobby to receive letters. They will be picked up, printed in The Standard's Christmas edition next week, and then forwarded to Santa at the North Pole.
The youth of the First Methodist Church sponsor a chili supper on Saturday from 5 50 to 8 30 p m in the Methodist Fellowship Hall. Fifty cents buys all the chili. Proceeds from the supper and Saturday bake sale on the square support the Intermediate Department piano purchase and their Bolivian missionary project for Dr Billie Jack Marshall.
