McCulloch County faces a Saturday election on consolidating the sheriff and tax assessor collectors offices with Sheriff Tax Merger attracting little interest. County Judge Love Kim brough notes only about a dozen residents have spoken and expects the offices to remain separate.
Brady voters will decide on two propositions to close and abandon several streets near the Roddie Wool Scouring Plant and the Dutton property north of Brady Creek. Proposition One targets Magnolia East Second East Third streets in the Luhr Addition. Proposition Two covers Mesquite Commerce Lockhart Oak Mesquite Willow East Richards streets around the Dutton estate. Election judges named and boxes open 8 am to 7 pm Saturday.
The Farm Bureau district queen contest will be held at 8 p m on Thursday September 1 at the State Theater in Winters Cheryl Huffman daughter of Mr and Mrs H J Huffman will represent McCulloch County A rehearsal for the contestants is at 4 p m followed by an informal tea at 5 p m
Mrs. H. Creighton Craig Jr appeals to Brady alumni living in Houston and nearby to contact her, aiming to organize a Brady picnic in September. She recalls a past Dallas reunion and asks former Brady residents to send names and addresses or call Gypsy 98612.
Bradyites watched the Echo I satellite move across the night sky. R B Thornton spotted it Tuesday at 9 45 p m as the bright dot appeared to travel, with the satellite returning Wednesday at 9 15 p m from the southwest toward Rochelle and again on Thursday night at 8 53 p m and 11 p m.
Brady City Council asked two local developers D Moore and Ernst Otte to include alleys in a 10 acre subdivision south of a West 17th Street home cluster. Council urged alleys to aid garbage collection and utility work while inviting a rate increase from Southwestern States Telephone Company. E W Wilson Jr bid 16.5 cents per square for asphalt and 1.45 per ton for rock for Curtis Field Richards Park and city streets.
Mr and Mrs Narvel L Rogers of Hurst welcome a nine pound baby girl born August 10 named Teresa Kaye. Grandparents are Grady Moore of Lohn and N R Rogers of Brady.
A California woman in her fifties visited Brady to pursue a rumored Keiser Iron Mining Company said to operate on Keiser Creek in McCulloch County. She sought a county map, claimed $1,000 stock, and reported payments of $250 to a rancher for a lease, while no such company is registered in Oklahoma.
Mrs W S Stevenson 52 of Van Horn and her daughter Miss Patience Stevenson 17 died in a San Angelo auto truck crash Tuesday afternoon. The women were Brady residents who operated Rockway Courts Cafe 1941 49. Burial set at Rest Haven. survivors include husband a son and daughter.
The Lohn School opens at 10 a m on Monday August 29 with buses running one hour later. Lunch will be served and dismissal is 2 30 p m. Regular classes start Tuesday August 30. Joy Ramsey joins the faculty as a third and fourth grade teacher from Brownwood. Coach John Clark starts football practice with daily workouts through Friday.
The Rev. J. J. Jordan of First Baptist Church is named chairman of the committee appointed by the Baptist General Convention of Texas to nominate trustees for the Baptist Memorial Geriatrics Hospital in San Angelo. The panel will fill board vacancies this year and trustees will be elected by messengers at the state convention in Lubbock from Oct 31 to Nov 2.
Kirby Huffman of Rochelle and Jack Weaver of Melvin tied for first in lamb feeding with 992 of 1000 points in the 1969 60 Commercial Feeding Program. Ray Doyal led pig feeding with 935 points and Jon Underwood scored 942 in calf feeding.
Brady High School plans student registration next week for an Aug 29 opening. Students will receive class schedules lockers and books. Fees include library 1 25, typing 4 50 yearly physics 1 50 yearly science 1 yearly and student insurance 3 yearly with optional 10 year coverage. Brady will host the McCulloch County Electric Co-op members from six counties for an annual membership meeting at the Brady Theatre with 8:30 a.m. registration and a 9:30 a.m. program. Directors will be elected from six nominees and a film The REA Story will be shown after the business session.
The Brady Bulldog Band chose five new majorettes at Garner State Park encampment. They are Nancy Archer Barbara McCord Tony Flemming Kathryn Leach and Pat Porter with Jeannette Sorell named alternate. Charlotte Kyzar serves as drum major.
Brady Police Chief Dorman Gibbs Deputy Sheriff Golden Jones and Texas Ranger Charlie Miller drove four Black men to Austin for lie detector tests after the 6 year old Brady Black girl was hurt in her southeast Brady home around 2 to 3 a m Sunday Aug 14. Tests Monday were inconclusive and the suspects were to return Thursday night.
