Aircraft Engine Used In 1919 Indy 500
In Amarillo an engine expert preserves a 299 cubic inch Packard V-12 once tested in a race car that finished sixth in the 1919 Indianapolis 500 driven by Ralph De Palma. The unit, built 1915 to power US aircraft, features dual overhead cams and a hemispherical combustion chamber, with a ram induction top carburetor. The owner says the engine, once rebuilt at substantial cost, may run and would be the first such aircraft engine car in 50 years.
