Jet Age Progress Demands Medical Examiner System
Fort Worth pathologist Dr John J Andujar urges a state wide medical examiner system in Texas in the July Texas State Journal of Medicine. He argues the current justice of the peace death investigations allow possible murder cases to go undetected and cites limited autopsy use and ballistics toxicology and pathology tools as essential. He notes four counties already use modern systems Harris Bexar Dallas and Wichita Falls and outlines new law allowing counties with 120 000 or more to establish medical examiner offices and votes begin in seven counties El Paso Hudsp, Jefferson, Lubbock, McLennan, Nueces and Travis with 1960 population totaling about 114 million. The act takes effect January 1 1965 and the issue remains whether Texans will abandon the old coroner system.
