Bradenton and Palmetto city league teams prepare for spring training at Ninth Street Park with six clubs, including Modern Woodmen and Manatee, opening May 2 for a season that aims to contest the R C Parvin trophy.
Fort Worth report credits Dandy Dirk Griffin manager Clyde Hull with the plan that led to Hull defeating Pete Latzo in a welterweight bout. Wynn scouted Latzo while Latzo trained for the fight, and Griffin’s strategy forced Latzo into a decisive loss in his home area.
NEW ORLEANS April 2 Fielding H Yost, famed football coach touring the South, declares the primary purpose of college is to build men. He says a university is not mainly for intellect or athletics, warning that favoring one side makes you look foolish.
In Palmetto's Bison Park Bradenton Braden ton tops Palmetto 12 to 5 after nine innings as both teams use all players. Pitchers Hunt and Harberson struggled with hits totaling 14, and seven local errors aid the scoring burst. Coaches Cornwall and Tompkins foresee stronger play after practice gaps.
Putnam Eng April 2 AP Cambridge University defeated Oxford by three lengths in the 79th annual boat race from Putney to Morelake. H T Kingsbury of Yale led the losing crew with a heroic but insufficient effort as Cambridge posted a 20 minutes 14 seconds winning time over 4 1 4 miles.
Lemon City won the official tri-county track meet in West Palm Beach with 39 points. Fort Lauderdale's Flying L gang finished second with 31 points, Stuart took third with 25, Danis fourth with eight, and Palm Beach high earned a single point. Avery of Fort Lauderdale set a new state high jump record at five feet 10.5 inches.
Connie Mack says the Athletics are the best he has managed and the sharpest in the south with no evident weaknesses. He notes strong defense, fast attack, and deep staff with ready youngsters to cover any aging veterans, signaling high pennant hopes.
Jacksonville April 2. A woman dominates the St Johns yacht club championships as Louise Turck in the Vennetia wins the feature ten mile race at 35 mph plus, finishing ahead of five rivals. Mrs J P Stevens of Savannah takes third as Savannah boats fail to win a first. Three thousand spectators witness the regatta with Gainesville’s Pound taking a first in the elimination event among outboard and skipjack entries.
Morton High School of Cicero Illinois defeated Batesville Arkansas 18 to 16 to win the National High School Basketball championship. Florence Mississippi took third place by beating Huron South Carolina 19 to 16 in the prior game, with a humorous note on a stationary guard from Florence.
In Fort Lauderdale on April 2, Jack Britton won a decision over Arturo Shekels after ten rounds at the Pompano race track.
Palmetto High and Manatee County High School of Braunton arrange two more baseball games with two additional matchups planned later in the season. The first game will be at Ninth Street Park in Bradenton on April 23 and the second on April 29 in Palmetto.
Winter Bradenton resident Dr. H. H. Davis claimed the Florida State Champion Cup at a St. Petersburg Festival of States tournament beating Ervin I. Locke of Paulsboro New Jersey. Locke earned the runner up cap. Davis has a history of medal wins from 1919 to 1926 across multiple towns.
