The drive for stricter traffic law enforcement yielded sixteen charges in Recorder Barney Whitehead's city court including eight for running stop lights eight? Wait.
Dye Mound hosts an all day homecoming event on Sunday October 1 inviting residents to bring guests and join in festivities.
Judge J W Chancellor longtime Sunday School teacher of the First Baptist Church Men s Bible Class resigns after decades of service guiding up to 150 men. A prominent Bowie attorney and former mayor, Chancellor also led civic causes and authored The Visograph. C Applegate elected successor. Bettis Coffield named assistant.
City Secretary D. T. Wilson released figures showing Bowie has over 60 miles of streets and 1262 residences 152 business houses 26 service stations 395 vacant lots. Population rose from 3470 in 1940 to 4530 in 1950, a 27 percent increase.
S L Greenwood station agent reports a flashing light highway crossing signal will be installed at Highway 59 and South Mason Street. Bob L Hoyt notes the project is moving as remaining material arrives after a year and a half of effort involving city officials and regulatory approvals.
Verdine Scott, a postal employee at the Bowie office, was named to head the Bowie Jackrabbit Club at a City Auditorium meeting led by Jess Parrish. Other officers include R I Cantwell, Paul Boedeker, Jess Elliott, Frank Moss, Paul Taliaferro, Joe Hamner, and Thomas Ayres.
Richardson Bros Feed and Seed Dealers Bowie announce they have secured the peanut purchasing business from W H Stephens and purchased Stephens big truck scales. The firm with a large warehouse elevator and mill will handle grading and purchasing of peanuts this fall.
The Bowie News earned an AAA rating in a nationwide study by the Community Research Bureau, placing it in the top 20 percent of weekly newspapers. The evaluation covered local news, editorial content, circulation, advertising volume and rate fairness, and noted the paper's strong circulation in Bowie's trade area.
The Bowie Jackrabbits host Handley tonight at 8 p.m. at Jackrabbit Field in the District 11-A opener. Aiming to rebound from a tough loss to Ranger Bulldogs, Bowie expects improved play, despite minor injuries to Robinson Boehr Williams Smith and Robicheaux. Handley arrives off a 13–0 win over Decatur after a 12–12 tie with Henrietta and a 12–6 season opener win over Laners.
Members of the local American Legion Auxiliary will hold a bake sale Saturday morning, September 30, starting at 9 a.m., in front of the Perkins Timberlake Store. They promise pies, cakes and other treats.
Four seeder drills for planting vetch and other legumes and grains have been received at Blackmon Implement Company for use through the Soil Conservation service on a small rental basis. Interested farmers may contact W. E. Farrell or Herbert Copeland for their soil districts. The machines will also apply fertilizer at the same time.
Miss Bettye Ferguson of Fort Worth was a week end visitor in the H. E. Henning home.
The Bowie Ministerial Association elected Rev. C. A. Tucker president succeeding Rev. J. C. Mann and Rev. G. B. Bradshaw as secretary treasurer. A union Thanksgiving service was planned at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. S. L. Wood as speaker to avoid crowding other events.
Mr and Mrs Claude L Martin returned from a 10 day hunt near Douglas Wyoming. They shot an antelope each on a 40 section ranch owned by John Downs about 35 miles from Cheyenne. They were guided by the State Game Commission Chairman and bought licenses there.
Harry J. Deaver and Delma Deaver along with Dr. B. B. Evans and Bill Gray Jr attended the football game in Dallas Saturday night.
Rev. C. A. Tucker of the First Presbyterian Church spent Tuesday and Wednesday at the Presbyterian Camp at Lake Dallas, taking part in church activities and retreats.
