The Montague County Fair exhibit highlights orchard, garden, farm, and pasture potential. Community progress is praised with notes on Donald Mann Ted Daley Carl Shurtieff Lynn Garlington and Captain Albert Kincer, praising civic involvement and local recognition.
Mrs. Hallie Collins Bowie Realtor completed two residence sales in Bowie this week. The five room home of C. A. Pigg on Washington Street sold to O. D. Liggett. The four room house at 214 Stalling Street sold by M. Lister to Ethel Eichblatt.
Two men sought the Bowie Chamber of Commerce manager post and appeared before directors. One applicant hailed from Pampa and the other from Ka, both with qualifications deemed splendid for the position. Employment is expected soon after reference checks on the candidates.
Tide Montague County Fair closed its 1946 four days at Pelham Park with a large crowd. The Rodeo and Buckaroo Round-Up directed by Joe Day of Rhome capped the week. Over $2,000 in cash prizes were paid to exhibitors. Parade winners included Maids and Matrons Duchess Paula Boedeker and runners-up from Bowie Garden Club and Bowie Rotary Club.
Twenty two rural telephone lines connect with the Bell Telephone office, serving the Roth Hill and Selma communities. The 22 lines total 106 rural connections.
Five year old Jackie Bounds son of Mr and Mrs J W Hopper was taken to Fort Worth Wednesday night for treatment of poliomyelitis. He was transported by an Owens Brumley ambulance.
Interior renovations proceed at the Hi Way Cafe at Wise and Smythe streets following last week’s sale. New owner Luther Hickey, a Bowie area cafe veteran, serves as day cook while George Edwards oversees the night shift. Additional equipment planned as available.
Roy Stom son of C O and Mrs C O Stom of Bow ie led the Montague County Fair sweepstakes after entering four animals and winning first prizes on all but one. He captured top honors for a six month old Hereford bull and two first prizes in Hampshire hog entries. In poultry he won a White Rock cockerel and a pen with a cockerel. A Bowie High School junior in vocational agriculture he plans to return next year with improved stock.
Machinery and other equipment arrived this week for a new steam laundry by W. J. Jeffries in southwest Bowie. A modern concrete and tile building about forty by sixty feet has been completed, with opening expected at a very early date.
W W Hagler has moved his leather goods shop from the Overfelt building to the second door from the bank on Tarrant street. He installs equipment for shoe and boot repair and other leather work and will open Monday September 30. Leonard Reed, a new Bowie resident and veteran with leather goods experience, joins with his family from Nocona.
H. F. McDaniel Montague County Service Officer says he will be at the City Auditorium Bowie each Monday to assist ex service men with their problems. His office is in the Montague County Courthouse and the arrangement serves residents of the area.
Guvnn Washburn Bettis Cof ield and JoAlan Spears left Monday for a business trip to San Angelo.
JoAlan Spears of Bowie Texas has accepted appointment as Major and will serve as Executive Officer of the 49th Cavalry Squadron in the 49th Armored Division. He began National Guard service in 1934, later served in the Reserve Corps and in World War II in Coast Artillery and Antiaircraft units. He rose to Lieutenant Colonel in Europe and is an A&M College graduate with a petroleum distribution business in Bowie.
Ike Parks owner of the Style Shop in Bowie buys the brick building housing his mercantile business and plans expansions. The cash sale set one of the best prices for local business property as Parks enlarges sales space and may add a second floor to accommodate larger stocks of women’s ready-to-wear gifts and jewelry through Parks and Bradley.
A Bowie article documents the Majestic Theater owned by Frank Benson showing a modern facelift. The interior now features new flooring seating and updated equipment highlighting the theater's forward looking improvements.
Dr. A D Major and Dr R A Major announce the Major Clinic Hospital opening in Nocona on Sunday September 29 with an open house from 2 30 to 6 30. Construction began months ago on the city donated site. The facility aims to provide modern clinic and hospital services. The Majors are Bowie residents’ sons.
Big interest centers on tonight’s game at Bowie High School as Bowie meets Olney in a non conference clash. Bowie of district 12A aims to rebound after a 20 to 0 season opener victory over Masonic Home Masons while Olney eyes revenge from last year’s close Bowie win.
Mr and Mrs C K Morgan hosted two days last week their guest J K Morgan brother of Mr Morgan from Mangum Oklahoma noting a familial visit with time shared at their home.
State plans bids for Montague county unit of the interstate between Bowie and the Jacksboro-Chico road. Survey done. right of way secured months ago. Clay County ready to proceed once Montague connects with their section. Engineer Rabe of Bowie oversees details and aims to finish Montague survey early fall.
The Stamps Quartet has been secured by the local American Legion post to perform at Bowie City Auditorium on Monday September 30 at 8 PM. Proceeds will aid the Legion Child Welfare and Disabled Veterans fund.

Continental and Sinclair hold leases on his land as Winsett prepares a 1500 acre block south of Bowie for shallow oil drilling. Nu Enamel plans a 7000 ft wildcat between Bowie and St Jo.
The Dallas Presbytery young peoples Fellowship meets at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church Bowie for an all day rally on Sunday September 29 1946 Dinner will be served and fellowship hour led by Miss Eula Broutherton of Vernon At 230 pm the rally program under Miss Fae Hankly of Dallas will be presented with visitors expected from Dallas Fort Worth Olney Denton Bogota and other churches in the Presbytery Public is invited.
The Ragsdale Garage and Rep air Shop opens on East Wise Street near the Winn Hatchery, specializing in Chrysler products with motor tune ups and battery charging services.
M D McCartney reports discovery of silver ore on his 77 acre land two and one half miles north of Bowie. Samples sent to Denver assayers show $3.20 in silver per ton with traces of gold. Ore found in old railroad dump and a cistern, now digging a quarter mile west of the house.
Mr and Mrs Ike Parks visited Wichita Falls on Tuesday. They toured local sites and met residents, according to arrivals noted in the society column.
