L. W. Hughes former Wolfe City coach and Leonard native is elected to lead the Bowie High School Jackrabbits for the 1942 season. He will teach Government and Public Safety and will be joined by Mrs. Hughes and their two children.
Due to county allotment cuts the Montague County Rationing Board issued few tires and tubes this week. One passenger tire or tube, six passenger retreads, two truck retreads were allocated along with seven truck tires and two tubes. Recipients include Andrew J. Fenogle and others in Nocona Bowie Forestburg Ringgold and Sp. Ft. worth noting recipients and counts.
The Bowie Lion's Club launches a 32 week perfect attendance contest starting next week's Thursday meeting. Members with perfect attendance will earn a 10 cent button from Lion International. The event honors Lion President Fred Hoeldtke during president's night. Charess F. Williams, Fort Worth, district Lion governor, will visit September 24.
L Turn Jr completed three months of schooling in the officer candidacy school at Aberdeen Proving Ground Maryland and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the ordnance division. He will teach at the Maryland school and will be joined by his wife who has lived in Oklahoma City. Roy E Wright of the coast guard returned to New Orleans after visiting his parents and sister. Service men visiting the Local Service Men's Center included Pvt John Milner Denver Colorado Pvt Leslie Fridley and Pvt Ivan Dugan Pineville Oregon Privates Raymond Saimi Crawford Jones and Robert Hayes Sheppard Field detachment Sgts Richard Layton Francis Irie Gil Viers Milton Yolles Sheppard Field.
Community gospel singers meet next Sunday at 3 p m in Bowie Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Luther Ewell, president, invites all singers and gospel enthusiasts to attend.
John W. Burnett, a Bowie visitor last week, spoke of his experiences as a Japanese prisoner for six months after the war began last December. He was born in Bowie and lived there for a time, and is the grandson of Mrs. W. W. Williams of Bowie.
Paul Donald Montague County Representative was named Tuesday a member of the state executive committee at the state Democratic convention in Austin. Other members include Everett McCullough Wichita Falls Mrs. Fred H. Minor Denton and Mrs. Ray Nichols Vernon. George A. Butler Houston attorney was elected chairman to succeed E. B. Germany Dallas with Mrs. H. H. Weinart Seguin re-elected vice-chairman.
Tom Pollard a Bowie truck farmer who sold plants in Bowie for years died suddenly of a heart attack Wednesday morning. He was 38 born January 26 1904. Survived by mother Mrs M A Pollard Bowie three brothers J B Pollard Bowie M C Pollard of Waurika Oklahoma W B Pollard of Petrolia Texas and two sisters Mrs Leona Crawford Oklahoma City and Mrs Faye Horton Newport. Services held at Selma by Rev John Webb with interment in Selma Cemetery.
Arthur B. Wells longtime Bowie resident and S Daube Co employee died last Friday morning after a heart attack. Funeral services were held Tuesday at First Baptist Church with Rev Tom Doss and Rev A J Quinn officiating. Interment at Elmwood Cemetery. Survived by wife Della Wells a stepdaughter Lyndwood Calif a brother Ben Wells Crafton and two sisters Effie Sherber Sunset and Rene Harris Vernon.
Miss Katherine Faulkner the first Mon tague County girl to join the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps was sworn in at the Dallas recruiting station. She among sixteen applicants was one of eight accepted and will go to Des Moines Iowa. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs G D Faulkner from Lindale and a Bowie High School graduate who has worked in Wichita Falls for three years.
Corp John G Shipp has been promoted to sergeant at Sheppard Field where he serves as a supply clerk in the 315th Technical School Squadron. He is the son of Mr and Mrs O M Shipp of Newport and graduated Bowie High School in 1938.
Henry M Burns longtime editor of the Nocona Times and the Nocona Star known as the Country Editor died after a brief illness at his home. Funeral services were held in Nocona with Rev. Frank Sutton and Rev. Frank Blackburn officiating. He wrote the column A Country Editor Speaks His Mind and gained fame for God be Broadway Hello Houston at the 1928 Democratic Convention. He is survived by his wife.
Members of the Nocona Rotary Club and Rotary Anns were guests of the Bowie club at Morrow's Grill on Wednesday night. Joel Cook served as master of ceremonies. Leta Jo Perry and Frances Jackson sang solos while Bowie representatives performed novelty numbers. Games followed the program.
Lt. Kenneth Reddy buried with military honors in Elmwood cemetery after services at the City Auditorium. Bowie stores closed at mayor’s request as crowd of 2,000 plus attended. speakers praised Reddy’s service after Tokyo raid and Distinguished Flying Cross. Survived by parents and three brothers.
Bertha Ann Byas 45 died September 7 at 6:00 a.m. Funeral services were held at Burgess Funeral Chapel with Rev. A. J. Quinn officiating. Survivors include husband R. L. Byas four children,Lt. Carl Byas of the Panama Canal Bowie residents Jerry Bob Billy Byas, parents W. E. Worley three sisters R. D. Prestwood Elbert Rhyne M. C. Baruff and a brother W. L. Hurley.
State game officials warn a 1942-43 hunting license lists a 12 dove bag limit for mourning and white-winged doves, but actual limits are 10 per day and 10 in possession. The discrepancy stems from new federal regulations conflicting with state law.
Brother G. H. Woolf will preach at the Salona Church Saturday night and Sunday morning. Everyone is cordially invited to attend.
Mrs. Edwin Widlake has moved to Dallas where Mr. Widlake is employed on a defense project.
