In Austin last week Jim's Gems notes the Beer and Whiskey Lobby prevailed briefly before the state House killed a tax plan expanding taxes to beer whiskey and food after two decades of no increases. The column also mulls racing talk about Texas football and local civic questions in Bowie and nearby areas.
Two trucks collided about 5:00 a.m. Tuesday two miles north of Alvord killing Donald Benjamin Smith 41 of Fort Worth and Charles Floyd Jackson 33 of Plainview. Bowie and Decatur troopers investigated and directed traffic for over two hours as Smith’s refrigerated rig bound for the north collided with a dry foods truck.
Voters in Road District 2A will decide Bowie s future growth and prosperity at the polls on Tuesday September 9 in a double ballot measure. The ballot proposes one or two road bond propositions whose passage or defeat will shape local development.
The Bowie Jackrabbits will be introduced at Jackrabbit Stadium by coach Jerry Cantrell as the 1969 team builds around returning players after a 6 4 season. They travel to Weatherford for a final scrimmage before facing Henrietta on September 12. Voters face two highway propositions totaling 290000 in right of way purchases with a forty cent tax increase, affecting Bowie and nearby districts.
Chamber of Commerce President Earl Yarborough announces Mrs. Frank A. Underwood as permanent Local Chairman of the James V. Allred Foundation. The fund aims to support the Alfred Museum in coordination with the Bowie Public Library and Mrs. Underwood will act as a liaison from Bowie to the statewide foundation.
A L Rusty Atkins Henrietta auc tioneer will auction the estate of Mr. and Mrs. T A Youngblood this Saturday September 6 at 9 30 a m. The sale site is seven tenths mile past the Trail Drive In Theatre on the Stoneburg Highway. Household items gardening and farming equipment included.
Bowie Police lock up Felix Gallen Prado 55 on investigation of alleged attempted rape in his apartment on August 31. Prado says he was beaten. the incident involved a seven year old girl and her nine year old sister. The girl's father is not charged. Bond set at 3000 by Justice J T Turner.
Mrs Talmage Garrett and Mrs W M Warner chair a Bowie Band Cake Walk on The Square Tarrant Street in Bowie in front of Triple D Discount Center at 7 p m Saturday September 6. Proceeds fund instruments uniforms and other needs for the band. Free concert and home baked cakes ice cream coffee and cakes available for attendees.
