Bowie high school debaters Mike Kunkel and Ernest Sam Heard head to Austin for the state meet with a rule that first-place win blocks Kunkel from inter-school debate for the rest of the term. Senior Heard faces tough odds while Kunkel seeks victory despite the restriction.
A playful verse about a funny little man and wild images. The speaker recounts odd scenes such as falling in a snowdrift in June, a jellyfish in a tree, gum in tea, and stirring milk with a brass key. The lines end with a quizzical note on punctuation.
The Bowie district plans a new elementary school near East Ward with a connected 50 foot covered walk. A four room unit with a music and art room will replace the deteriorating rock building. Lindale annex to be brick veneered and linked by a 25 foot covered walk. Bids due 7 p m May 20. Funding from maintenance funds over several years. no bond vote required. Architect is Roy Sanders Jr.
Parker's Food Store in Bowie joins nationwide celebration of the company 38th anniversary. Manager Clarence Newsom says Bowie will award 17 prizes at 9 p m May 14 with 171 prizes across all stores valued over 2000 dollars. Winners need not be present to claim prizes.
Vashti Grocer M. K. Reeves underwent major surgery at Bethania hospital in Wichita Falls on Tuesday according to a brief health note.
The Baccalaureate Service occurs Sunday night May 15 in the high school auditorium with Rev. Warren McSwain delivering the message. Commencement for the Senior class is Thursday night May 19 featuring James Allred, federal judge of Corpus Christi and former Texas governor. Junior high graduation follows Friday night May 20 with Joe McNeill, Wichita Falls superintendent, as speaker.
The Bowie junior high school tops are announced with Joyce Crumpler as valedictorian and Carolyn Gray as salutatorian. Joyce, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Prentice Crumpler, holds a 97.182 average while Carolyn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Gray, has 96.273.
Russell's Department Store will extend its Greater Value Days Sale through Monday May 9. Carl Russell reports strong response and new items added since the sale began last Friday. Supplies were short early in the week but have been replenished and are expected to cover advertised articles through next Monday.
Milton Carter of Carter & Whitecotton Grocery was dismissed from Nocona hospital Tuesday after surgery last week. Gordon Heard of Heard's Hardware underwent surgery Tuesday morning at Bowie hospital.
The Bowie garment plant under WJB Corp of Dallas will open after May 16 with Mrs. Werner to run operations. Equipment was moved from Springfield Missouri, hiring will begin with experienced workers then expand to trainees, aiming for about 150 employees. Final papers signed. rent timing moved up to June 1. Local street and parking lot improvements planned before opening.
The Bowie Chamber of Commerce voted to sponsor petitions asking the county court to call a bond election for up to 425000 to buy right of way for Highway 287 across Montague County except through Bowie. Fifty qualified voters must sign. The plan limits bonds to 3 percent interest and 25 years to repay.
At a Monday meeting the Bowie Junior Chamber of Commerce voted to install a louder tornado warning whistle. Donated last year by the Fort Worth and Denver Railroad, the whistle was placed atop the Burgess Funeral Home but the air compressor there is too small. Jim Henderson of the Monument Co. will operate the whistle using the company’s stronger air system, ensuring the blast can be heard citywide. The old funeral home whistle will stay in place.
Six condemnation suits have been filed in county court to acquire land for a new city lake. An access road is under construction to the lake site. Plaintiffs include T. B. Coffield, Fred Ford, E. L. Edgin, J. M. Williamson, Mrs J. G. Hayes, Ned Wilson, and T. A. Wright estate. Three more suits will follow as heirs are located. Mary Lee Hestland of Henrietta visited the Grahams on Sunday.
Bowie Home Demonstration club sponsors a day long cancer film event at the Majestic theatre. Woody Campbell provides the venue as hourly showings begin at 10 a.m. and run through the day. The screening is free to the public and aims to educate about cancer as part of the county program.
Mrs Arnold sold the Clover Farm store stock and fixtures to Mr Schroufe of Postoak. He has moved into a building to convert it into a grocery.
Senator Wayne Wagonseller says a bill to place game and fish rules under the State Game and Fish Department will include Montague and Clay counties. The measure passed the House, with Rep. Tony Fenoglio as sponsor, and is expected to pass the Senate. Over a thousand Montague County residents petitioned for jurisdiction, while commercial fishermen opposed the bill. Bowie fishermen advocate inclusion as Bowie Lake stock preparations move forward.
The patient roster includes L. B. Stephens A. L. George and many others from Bowie Sunset Forestburg Bellevue and nearby towns. Names include J. W. Miller C R Lynch Birdie Frances Willett and Janet Kirby among others with several infant entries.
Tommy Whitecotton announces a one day event at Carter and Whitecotton Grocery offering free rides for children ages six to sixty on a miniature Dairy-Go-Round at the store Friday.
Bowie High School concert and junior bands swept Western Region 10 awards at Midwestern University Wichita Falls with first place in concert performance and sight reading Bowie also won marching top honors earlier in Wichita Falls Wichita Falls was the other regional sweepstakes winner Solo ensembles and choral contests are scheduled for May 7 in Wichita Falls Bowie concert groups will perform May 18 at the high school auditorium directed by Glenn Cunningham

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Brumfield of Bowie on the birth of twin daughters Teresa Dale and Lenesa Gale born Thursday April 28 at Bowie hospital. Teresa Dale weighs 6 lbs 2% ozs and Lenesa Gale 6 lbs 1 oz. Grandparents are R. J. Woody and L. A. Brumfield of Bowie.
