Second Monday drew an unusually large Bowie crowd with Farmer's Eat Shop noting the biggest turnout in two years. J C Vaughn cites strong pull of Bowie News ads as used piano buyers contacted him. R J Sandefur recalls local history near the lake site. Levi’s gains at Jackson's confirm strong local retail interest.
The Bowie girls clinched the 2A state title at the Interscholastic League tournament in Austin by beating Angleton 54 52 in the final after advancing with a 59 56 win over Gatesville. Carol Ann Smith set a 2A tournament record with 43 points in the Bowie Gatesville game and 71 total for the meet while Sue Jackson scored 18 in the final. The Bowie News also notes the Bowie Youth Center annual campaign and remodeling plans at a budget of 4500 with ongoing fundraising efforts and facility upgrades.
The City of Bowie holds a district court hearing next Wednesday to fix the price on Tracey Admire’s house and 65 acres in the Lake Land condemnation case. Judge Howard Mays appoints three commissioners Ray Beal C R Gifford and Wm Hawkins to assess value excluding mineral rights. L E Gandy may appeal to get a new hearing by tomorrow. city attorneys say another condemnation suit is ready to file today.
Voters in the Lone Star School district approved a tax increase from one dollar to one dollar fifty by 38 to 4. The ballot was held last Saturday at the Lone Star school as residents urged funds to meet district needs.
Tickets are available at the Bowie Chamber of Commerce office for the Nocona Chamber of Commerce program on Monday May 28 with Jeff Williams as principal speaker.
The city council approved curb and gutter installation on Orchard Street once property owners deposit 1.37 dollars per front foot or arrange payment. Petitioners from North Mason to Matthews supported the measure, with aim to extend to Cowan Street. Traffic drainage reasons cited.
Bob Patterson, noted local photographer, earned accolades at the Southwestern Photographer's Convention held in Fort Worth Texas Hotel. Three of his prints were hung, including aDistinguished Print Award for the Tommie O Neal image. 240 of 600 entries were chosen for display in the association's permanent collection.
Two Bowie High School players named to the All-State squad. Carol Ann Smith earns unanimous selection. Lawana Robinson, Bowie guard, named as the second Bowie representative on the team.
Bowie High School basketball players receive multiple honors from judges and tournaments. Carol Ann Smith leads scorers with 1060 regular season points and 71 at the State tournament, earning unanimous All State and two all tournament selections. Lorna Sue McLeland, Mildred McCraw, Lawana Robinson, Sue Jackson, and Linda Campbell are noted for guard play, defense, rebounding, and scoring as teammates.
Due to persistent drought and critically low lake levels the water supply is strained. The city orders curtailment of non domestic uses and bans lawn watering car washing and garden irrigation unless absolutely necessary. Penalties to be enforced by council.
Yanis W. Redman of Saint Jo has filed for the county school board by petition of Saint Jo citizens. Incumbent W. O. Childress of Caps Corner terms ends April 2. Other candidates are Mark High of Bowie and Hardy L. Seay of the Nocona Ringold area seeking re election at large. Filing with County School Supt Henry W. Johnson in Montague must occur ten days before the April 2 election.
Roy D. Sanders Jr. urges Bowie residents to contribute to the Red Cross drive as only about half have replied to mailed letters. The drive closes officially on Tuesday. Assisted in Bowie by Dr. B. H. Roberts, Billy Neeld, Bob Posey, Jack Lovette, Bill Jack Evans, George Hoeldtke and Gordon Heard.
Bowie Masonic Lodge will meet Tuesday night March 22 at 7 30 to confer a Master Masons degree. Refreshments will be served. All members and visiting Master Masons are cordially invited to attend.
Mrs W C Buchanan and her son David spent Monday in Sherman along with Mr and Mrs Jack Murray for a brief visit.
Four Dallas garment manufacturers led by Irvin Jaffe of the W. J. B. Corporation toured the Bowie plant and endorsed the structure. Gold and son and their engineer Weinecke joined the inspection. Jaffe said machinery could move in Monday and the building would be finished by April 1. Mrs. R. A. Werner would head the Bowie plant, seeking a small acreage site and rent for typewriters and adding machines.
Two Bowie high school athletes Raymond Clements and Richard Bradley set track records at the Possum Kingdom Relays in Graham. Clements won the low hurdles in 20.5 seconds and Bradley clocked 51.5 seconds in the 440 yard dash as Bowie placed fourth in Class A among 27 teams. Coaches were Raymond Mattingly and R L Fite with supervision by Roy Curry, Graham coach and former Bowie athlete.
Multiple birth announcements from Bowie area residents include Gary Neal Ebensberger born February 24 in Dallas weighing 9 pounds 15 ounces to Mr. and Mrs. A C Ebensberger. Larry Steve Gill born March 11 in Gainesville weighing 9 pounds 3% ounces to Mr. and Mrs. James C Gill. Cindy Carol born March 11 at Bowie Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Carol Davis weighing 9 pounds 7 ounces. Grandparents named. A granddaughter born to Barbara Garrett in Fairbanks Alaska at Ladd Field Air Force Base Hospital weighing 7 pounds 14 ounces. Lions Club Gollies show set for March 18 at 8 PM in Bowie City Auditorium with local talent and country store. proceeds to Camp Fire Girls and Boy Scouts with additional Lions Welfare fund contributions. Cast list includes numerous Bowie and area performers and guest entertainers from Duncan and Nocona Oklahoma.
Mr and Mrs Carrol Robertson attended the funeral of D L Monroe in Gainesville Wednesday afternoon.
