Local notes report Jim Bowie Days event begins with a large, planned program for visitors. Milton Carter shares a carpentry tale from a Canadian fishing trip while a Hobby Fair registers items at 1138 W Wise with prizes judged by visiting craft experts.
Rain drenched the Bowie area on Monday with Montague Stoneburg and Nocona seeing the heaviest totals exceeding six inches in places. Fruitland Experiment Station at Montague logged 3.58 inches while Cozart Feed Store Bellevue Montague Nocona Ringgold each reported multiple inches and some readings ranged 5 to 6 inches. The Pioneer Reunion was announced for June 29 and 30 from 10 am to 4 pm.
Bowie Public Library shows rapid growth with rising book circulation after moving to new quarters. January through May totals climb from 40 to 621 books borrowed, with more than 1 000 added since the move and state and friends contributions. Citizens from Sunset to Montague praise the facility.
Reading programs for ages 6 to 16 and story hours for 3 to 4 and 5 to 6 year olds have been arranged. Ronald Jenkins reported a year to date library outlay of 1650 dollars and the formation of Friends of the Library with Dr James Doughty as president Leon Partridge as vice president and Mrs E P Harris as secretary. An Auto Book Deposit costing 50 dollars was purchased. The council added Dr Nat Blake and Mrs Bill Jack Evans to the library board. Playground equipment at Pelham Park is installed and workmen are active.
The First Christian Church began meeting in the East Ward School cafe till its new building is ready. Owners Jimmy Henderson Randal Peters of Bowie and Lagrand Henderson of Wichita Falls purchased the church property on East Wise street. A lease with Goodyear Co. sets a company store, with construction to finish this fall. The 6000 to 9000 square foot church will occupy hospital authority land.
A. Nea Hear notes Glen Jones participates in square dancing while some judges lean toward round style. An office was disappointed by the absence of a carnival this year and learned he enjoys riding the Ferris wheel.
The Jim Bowie Days Hereford Show will be held Thursday and Friday at Pelham Park in the Hereford Show Barn. Judging starts Thursday at 10:00 a.m. About fifty entries have been submitted to the sponsors, the Montague Hereford Breeders Association.
Jaycees plan a holiday rest stop by Fruitland US on East Highway 287 from noon to midnight to promote highway safety. motorists through Bowie are invited for free coffee or soft drinks and cookies. displays aim to boost driver caution on long trips.
The Jim Bowie Days celebration starts in Bowie with a fly in at the municipal airport and a pioneer reunion hosted by local clubs. A parade, rodeo, dances, and varied activities for 10,000 visitors mark day one as merchants welcome neighbors.
