City revenue from water sales trails last year by 1500 dollars monthly as officials discuss a 10 percent car license increase slated for August 22 by House Bill 620. The Bowie News notes publication timing around July 4 and requests early submission of news and ads.
Stockholders in the Montague Farmers Co op met at Meyer park for their annual meeting after a barbecue lunch. W. F. Robinson and E. L. Covey were re elected directors with M. N. Liggett of Bellevue elected a new director. The auditor report showed a good year’s business. Directors will meet tonight to elect officers. Attendance was good.
The Chisholm Riding Club from Nocona won the parade trophy while Bowie Roping Club took second. The rodeo net totaled 183.35 with 149.40 from the dance and overall receipts of 332.75. An Arlington rider, Hipp Wayland, broke his leg and was sent to hospital after a Friday bare back event.
Mr and Mrs Jack Goddard and family of Borger were weekend visitors in the home of her sister and family Mr and Mrs J W Philpott in Wichita Falls Texas.
Bowie welcomes a new financial institution as the First Savings and Loan Association of Bowie prepares to open its doors on Monday July 1. The office sits three doors west of First National Bank and already handles deposits totaling 225000 with loans issued before opening. President Fred L Raborn Jr oversaw compliance with state and federal rules amid Washington based delays. Deposits are insured up to 10000 and the association joins the Federal Home Loan Bank system, offering mortgage discount options. Secretary Mrs Stacy Parker leads the Bowie office while local ties include Coach H Dodson’s wife.
A boat capsized near sundown on Lake Amon G Carter with five aboard, all were saved. Two women could not swim but stayed afloat with help from Shorty Dorman and Chris Hancock until rescue boats arrived. The party included Mr and Mrs Chokas Mr and Mrs Wells and W L Woolsey.
Mrs. Carol Robertson has taken the position of secretary at the Alfred and London law office for the summer. She will return to the high school as secretary in the fall.
The grand jury has been notified to appear at the District Court room on Friday June 28. Montague county wheat farmers with 15 acres or more voted on marketing quotas last Thursday. Of 74 eligible voters, 27 cast ballots with 26 in favor and 1 against. National turnout showed 81 percent approval.
The Montague County Historical committee proposes an auxiliary coordinating group with civic organization reps. Plans call for forming a Montague County Historical Association, honoring rural schools, collecting documents for exhibits, bronze plaques for pioneer families, historical trail markers, a Red River Station marker, and promoting the 1958 centennial. The auxiliary will meet July 22 at the courthouse with members from Bowie Nocona Saint Jo Sunset Forestburg Forestburg areas and other towns.
The council passed an ordinance licensing boats for hire on Lake Amon G. Carter with a $5 yearly fee and required safety gear. Licenses issued by the police, boat passenger limits, lights rules, and alcohol restrictions are detailed. The measure also sets speed, passing rules, accident reporting, and fines up to 200 dollars. Public hearing on paving financing and curb work was also announced.
City officials delayed any decision on sharing hospital costs for indigents from Bowie. Judge W D Grigsby and County Commissioner Howard Middleton urged action, noting county hospitals charge only actual costs and that past payments will reach about fifteen thousand dollars, which the county cannot cover.
Scott Whaley presented the regular city financial report noting 85000 dollars in liquid assets. Flynn Stewart of Wichita Falls delivered figures for the annual city audit covering the year ending March 31 1957. He said city records are generally in good shape and recommended updating cemetery lot sale records due to historical underpayments.
George Teague was named to the city tax equalization board to succeed Curtis Latham.
The city council designates the week of July 16 as cleanup week with curbside trash collection by city trucks for all containers placed at the curb during that period.
The council voted Monday night to increase the fee for city police court cases from $2.50 to $3.00 per case. The hike aims to cover the new higher fee. City Attorney Marvin London said recent legislation also raised the fee for Justices of the Peace from $4 to $5 per case starting September 1.
Property owners on Cummings Street asked for partial curb and guttering and paving from Wise to Pecan Street. No action was taken.
Paul Baccus, Joe Pig and J. C. Shorty Hendrix conferred with the council about the boat ordinance. The council passed the measure and allowed Hendrix 25 dollars monthly for gasoline to patrol the lake. He will appoint auxiliary lake police approved by the council, who will receive fees only if parties are arrested and fined.
Jimerson presented two petitions to the Bowie city council with about 75 signatures. The residents urged immediate steps to end raw sewage dumping near homes and to move the dump grounds farther from the city. Mayor Greenwood said a sump pump has been purchased and a program is being arranged to handle the matter.
Kathy Widlake 11 daughter of Ed Widlake escaped serious injury after a squall struck a Possum Kingdom Lake boat. The motor throttle stuck, she was hurled overboard, and a fin cut her left thigh. Her father applied a tourniquet before rushing her to Graham hospital for first aid. she is home with a leg cast.
Harold Cunningham left the first of the week on a business trip to Galveston. He visited appliance dealers who are customers of the Dealers Fideli ty Finance Co. enroute to Galveston where he is attending a butane dealers convention. He will visit dealers en route home.
Glenn Cunningham visited the first of the week with Mrs Cunningham and daughter Leslie in Lubbock where Mrs Cunningham is attending college.
A hospital notes shows admissions including Mrs Armelia Scheller Eddy Wheeler Mrs W M Hickman Mrs Sid Gilmore Leo Reaves and others from Bowie plus Sunset Alvord Chico and Bellevue entrants. Discharges list J M Small Mrs Marvin Rogers infant Scott Michael and several others.
William Jack Flood of Fort Worth succeeds Jack Abbott as Humble bulk agent in Bowie. Flood and his wife with two daughters relocate to Bowie after 60 years with Humble in Fort Worth. Abbott moves to Fort Worth to become city salesman. both roles are in Humble on the job training program. The Floods attend First Baptist Church.
Mrs. Lynn Garlington is in Dallas for the Texas Dancing Masters Convention at the Baker Hotel. Mrs. L. D. Waltman will join her daughter on Thursday and stay through the week, returning home Saturday.
Mrs Della Clary of Davis Oklahoma visited Sunday with her mother Mrs J W Brown and nephew Billy Neeld and family.
Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Weldon Byas of Bowie on the birth of a son at the Nocona hospital Sunday June 16. Richard Craig weighs 8 pounds 6 ounces.
