Kelly Construction Company of Shawnee won the $22 000 bid to build a 42 acre detention reservoir 20 miles southwest of Bowie. The Texas project by the U S Soil Conservation Service aims to prevent flooding on the Jacksboro Chico highway and adjacent farms, with completion in three months.
Bowie's water system suffered a Saturday pump failure halting lake to town supply. Mayor John McNatt announced a stop water use alert to conserve for firefighting until two new pumps and transformers arrive in July. A proposed 250000 gallon elevated reservoir would replace the patched tower, at a cost around 40000, with needed pipe upgrades noted.
Rain totaling 2.14 inches in the Bowie area and up to three inches in northern Montague county fell Wednesday through Wednesday night. It relief from drought, aids maturing crops, and benefits vineyards tomatoes melons and other crops. It also helps peanuts and provides needed stock water in streams and tanks.
Hundreds visited Evans Motor Company's showroom last Saturday to view the new 1949 Ford. Free drinks were served on opening day. T. P. Evans expressed gratitude for the enthusiastic interest shown by the visitors.

Mays a 35 year old Montague county lawyer and farmer announced his candidacy for County Judge He lives on his stock farm in Hardy community with his wife and three children and is a Baptist Church member He cites term limits and local Democratic self government in his biographical statement seeking votes and support.
The Montague County Democratic Executive Committee set fees for primary candidates due July 24. Sheriff, County Attorney, County Clerk, and Assessor-Collector face $200. County Commissioner $145 each. County Treasurer $135. District Clerk $145. County Judge $180. Justice of the Peace and Constable $5 each. All must pay by next Monday to appear on the ballot. helpers at the polls will be paid $7.50 per day.
City Council in session Tuesday night authorized a property valuation equalization board for the annual job and named A. H. Garrett Howard Williams and R. K. McClelan. The Council fixed a charge of 10 for each order for tapping the city water mains. The Council also voted a 10 percent raise in salary for all regular full time employees and advanced the pay for common laborers on city projects from 60 cents to 75 cents the hour.
Raborn Motor Company completes relocation to 8 Wise in the remodeled Myers Building, former Edwards Motor, offering larger shop and offices with easier access for trucks. Fred L. Raborn Sr. leads the Dodge and Plymouth agency with full parts line. Continued on Page Seven.
The photographer documented G. E. Blackmon's ranch six miles NW of Bowie on the Wichita Falls highway near the old Panther City site. He shows fine shorthorn Durham cattle beside a former mine shaft pool, millet crop progress, and ten acres of Madrid clover hay. Blackmon, a Soil Conservation District board member and Wise Rural Electrification director, pitches legumes and fertilizers to boost land values.
T Roy Coffield president of the First National Bank of Bowie spoke on banking functions to Rotarians. He noted the bank handles 5500 accounts with deposits near five million dollars and pays over 4500 annually for FDIC insurance. The club hosts its officers installation and Ladies Night on Tuesday at Lions Hall. Jimmie Edwards, on leave from the Navy, visits his parents after 20 months on Guam.
Dickey Williams Tailors on Tarrant street announces a remodeling program with a new front and modern improvements. The building will be closed for a few days during the work.
The Southwest Montague County Singing Convention meets at Fruitland Baptist Church on Sunday June 27 with a 10 30 a m to 4 p m song service. The public is invited and urged to attend for a day of Gospel singing led by S P Wall president.
Miss Opal Wood leads the youth recreation program with art craft and play activities as Bowie prepares a full day July 5 in Pelham Park. The Lions Club fundraiser features a father and son sack race band concert floor show a Negro ball game fiddler contest wrestling and more to support summer programs for area youths.
Tip Jimerson owner of Tip's Milk Bar says he will sponsor a large kiddie party in Pelham Park. The event will feature free pony rides and ice cream for children with date to be announced.
The past week Congress passed a bill to draft young men aged 19 to 25 for the armed forces. The president has ten days to sign it and Selective Service officials expect the draft to start around August 15 with calls continuing for about 90 days. The president could exempt single men with dependents who are essential workers in agriculture and industry.
