The Attorney General explains the burden of collecting delinquent state sales taxes and argues the tax funds education health and regulatory programs. He cites 1972 state revenues of about $818 million and $17 million in city shares, noting most businesses pass taxes to the state quarterly.
The Texas Comptroller reports collections of delinquent sales taxes remain high as many permittees fail to pay. Legislators passed a bill requiring security such as bond from sales tax licensees with poor payment records, effective January 1. This aims to ensure state revenues fund public services.
