A severe storm in Bowie caused extreme weather with high heat then a Monday afternoon thunderstorm bringing heavy gusts and rain. Lightning ignited a barn three miles north of Bowie owned by Mrs. W. R. Potter, burning about 150 bales of Leon VanVader's hay. tree limbs fell, signs blew down, and a plate glass window at Park Shaw Tin Shop on Mason Street shattered.
Donald Langston son of Mr and Mrs J N Langston 607 Raymond completed his course at North Texas State College on July 14 and will receive a B S degree in August He was graduated in 1945 from Bowie High School Langston a secondary education major was a member of Future Teachers of America and Gamma Theta Upsilon He is now employed by the Weather Bureau in San Antonio Texas.
Bowie schools lose two teachers this week as Phil Baker band director and Glenn Moore distributive education teacher resign. Moore will join Nowata Oklahoma and Baker will work at Cacey near Houston. Baker previously replaced George Rucker in September. Moore led a new department. Both seek higher pay in new jobs.
Mrs. E R Mangum relies on Bowie News ads for lost items and honesty. A Friday July 13 classified notice described a diamond set pin. Ruby Gilmore spotted the ad, Annielee Reeves found a matching pin, and Mrs Mangum confirmed the piece her husband gave 39 years ago. Reeves returned it and Mangum rewarded her.
Coy Bakers Grocery and Market in Bellevue was burglarized Monday night July 23. The entry was made through the back door. About 20 cases of coffee and all cigarettes and cigars were taken along with around 35 dollars in cash. The burglars refreshed themselves with pop before leaving.
Five drunken drivers were taken off highways in the Bowie area over the weekend. Most offenders were 40 to 60, including three from Montague County and two from Bellevue, Clay County. Fines ranged from 50 to 100 dollars with costs, plus six months license suspension for Montague County men. some counties consider jail instead of fines. A 17 year old from Bowie was fined for reckless driving after fleeing officers and turning off his headlights.
Senator Wayne Wagonseller travels through the Thirteenth District to announce his opening address on eight radio stations this Friday in the race to replace Ed Gossett who resigned. Fellow candidates Joe Jackson Walter Jenkins and Frank Ikard campaigned in Bowie, while W D McFarlane former congressman considers entry and touts thirty years in Graham, Young County.
A modern five room home with attached garage is being built for Mr. and Mrs. Tom Lee across from the G. H. Golden residence in North Bowie. Gary Nees Lumber Company supplies materials and Russell Lacy with Bob Latham handle the construction.
Robert Leon McGregory, eight months old, son of Mr and Mrs Leon McGregory, is pictured with maternal grandparents R V Garrett and Company Furniture Store and paternal grandparents Fred McGregory. Ronnie helps in the store and has three great grandmothers.
Superintendent Claude Thompson reminds parents that August 1 is the deadline for transfers between school districts. Applications must be filed with H. W. Johnson, County Superintendent, in Montague. Bowie residents can obtain forms at Bowie City Hall with Mrs. Eva Giles or at the superintendent's office.
Dr A J Quinn will preach at the First Baptist Church of Bowie starting Sunday July 29 for a revival meeting through August 12 with morning and evening services. He is a former pastor and now district missionary for District 12 in the Texas Baptist General Convention based in Amarillo.
Chief Clisby purchased the old Bowie Blade building and lot from Able W. Cline Jr. The landmark downtown site, once home to the Blade published since 1923, will host a domino parlor and recreation club run by Bill Myrick and Dick Bishop after renovations by Oscar McDaniel.
E. H. Christopher of Bowie has been notified by Washington that a U S patent has been granted for his Flow Metering Device used by oil companies to feed chemicals that separate water from heavy oil. The patent took three years and five months to secure. Christopher also holds a patent for a paraffin scraping device used in servicing oil wells, manufactured for him by Elvin Butler Machine Works on East Wise Street.
The annual Leona Homecoming will be held Sunday July 29 with morning Sunday School and preaching by Rev. Darius McKay. An afternoon basket dinner and singing are planned after services.
Large crowds tour the State Fruit Experiment Station seven miles northwest of Bowie for the annual Fruit Festival. A morning breakfast for twelve county agents and four Extension Service specialists preceded field trips through orchards and vineyards, with judges awarding cash prizes for fruits and melons. An address on deep freezing preservation followed lunch, and Ariel Randolph led tours and spoke on station work.
E. L. Debe Dutton is now sole owner of the Moyer Dutton Radio Shop in Bowie after purchasing the interest from Mrs. Alice Irwin owned by the late K. D. Moyer. There is no change in the firm name. Dutton is a Knifco dealer, offering a wide range of radio products and parts and a service shop for all radio makes.
Thomas Evans president of the Bowie Lions Club announces a ducking machine on the streets Saturday night around 8 30 p m near the Drive In Drug Store The public is invited to join the fun and take part in the event.
A Bowie recreation photo features Temple Tucker 6 feet 744 inches and Tim Hall 7 at Lake Bridgeport beach. Tucker, son of Rev. C. A. Tucker, is expected to star in Bowie basketball this year and Tim Hall, son of Jack Hall, is noted as growing taller as his father remains athletic.
A large crew has worked all week on the Majestic Theatre remodel including two aisles and 250 prime seats plus new carpet and decorations. The Majestic reopens Saturday July 28 while Ritz completes reforms and screens Samson and Delilah in technicolor from August 4 through August 8.
Mrs. C. L. Martin Sr trades her East Tarrant street residence for the Hancock home on East Wise street. Both houses are among Bowie's most modern and attractive, with the Martin home being larger. Move likely Monday or upon Mrs. Martin's return from West Texas.
Jones Robinson and his son of Amarillo visited his parents Mr and Mrs W F Robinson this week. The Jones Robinsons plan to return to Bowie to make their home.
