The Rotary Club of Bowie promotes vocational classes for ex service men under a government support plan. The program aids many GIs and unlocks community funds for local use while highlighting civic cooperation during the period of resource preservation and job training.
Montague County expects a record turnout in the Democratic primary with about 6500 votes statewide and Bowie boxes totaling around 2000. Polls open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. with three Bowie voting places and results posted at Benson & Benson, as county chairman Frank Moss attends.
Loyd Wood announces a tag football game Monday night July 29 at 8 00 between Bob Raley s Chislers and Howard Danson s Mud Stingers. A softball game follows and Doris Williams Hepcats meet Cynthia Dalety s Muskrats with admission 10 and 15 cents.
W A Brinkley returned from New York Philadelphia and St Louis. He attended the Lions convention in Philadelphia.
Fred L. Raborn and daughter Martha Irene traveled to Evansville Indiana and Detroit Michigan to visit Dodge and Plymouth factories. On the trip they stopped at Chrysler Motors Parts Depot in Kansas City Missouri. Raborn notes Chrysler is producing cars and trucks at a high rate but with limits and warns care for the current car. He believes the auto industry will lead peacetime production after restrictions end.
Glenn Pribble County Clerk reports 350 absentee ballots cast in Montague County with about 300 received by Tuesday afternoon and roughly 50 more in the mails to be counted before election day, noting the potential material impact on several races.
Mr and Mrs W A Arnold of Fort Worth were guests Sunday in the A J Allen home and also visited Mr and Mrs Cecil Allen.
Dr. Homer P. Rainey former University of Texas president addressed Bowie voters under a Rainey for Governor Club banner. He outlined campaign issues and answered questions on taxation and anti communism, defending democracy and Christian ideals.
Frank Benson and Ellis Butler of the Bowie Majestic returned from Dallas Tuesday night with a truck load of fine furniture for the theatre lobby. The furnishings include chrome chairs and settees with leather upholstery, enhancing the place’s attractiveness.
Lloyd Ellis operating a Stoneburg garage was critically burned Monday when gasoline sprayed while he was installing a fuel pump and ignited as the motor started. He suffered burns to the chest back hands and an arm and was treated at Bowie Hospital.
Major Carl Langford and his wife arrived in Bowie Monday night from Washington where he has served long with the War Department on special duty. They left Washington Friday in a new 1946 Nash and are on fifteen days leave. In September he will be assigned to Colorado Springs.
T. J. Lankford opens a hat cleaning and blocking shop in the front of the Fashion Tailors building. He is an experienced hat man with up-to-date equipment and will also perform alterations on men’s and women’s clothing.
Arlington native A C Wimpee a World War II sergeant appears in uniform in a Bowie Methodist revival photo. He assists with music and directing youth, aids Rev Fitzhugh Talbot in preaching, and has supported USC and Red Cross efforts while boosting morale. The revival gains attendance and Wimpee staged Rotary Club’s best program of the year.
The Montague County Home Demonstration Council met July 19 in District Courtroom for their regular council meeting and Annual Rally with the chairman in charge. Eleven of the twelve organized clubs were represented. Minutes were read, twenty-seven council members attended, seven 4-H clubs represented with many 4-H girls. Three delegates were elected for Amarillo in August to the State Meeting: Mrs H C Fox, Mrs T C Davis, and Edna Roach. Exhibits from all clubs impressed judges Mrs Paul Oliver and Miss Jimmie Dale Harris. Prizes went to B B Club one, Valley Fort two, Spencer three. Miss Ruth Thompson spoke on Peace in our Communities and Preservation of Foods. A style show and dress performances followed. judges included Judge Holland. Commissioners were introduced. Dress shows featured 10-11-12 year olds led by Betty Murdock, Juanita Riley, and Patricia Cook with top placements from Lone Star, Lindale, Bonito and Sunset clubs.
Overstreet, a Bowies longtime resident, boasts 25 000 miles annually for twenty years totaling half a million miles as traveling seed buyer for Traders Oil Mill Fort Worth with no accidents. He offers safety advice urging drink no drive caution at crossroads, tire upkeep, early starts, avoiding speed, and steering clear of heated arguments.
Interest centered on the Bennett Sorrels Milton No. 1 wildcat eleven miles northwest of Bowie as operators reported the well plugged back to 6280 feet and cemented. Drilling of the cement to bring in the well was under way with considerable gas and some oil found at the location.
Shelton Electric and Montague Independents moved from the bottom to tie for second as Shelton beat Montague 5 to 2 on Tuesday. Shelton also beat the Lions 5 to 3 on Wednesday, with Walsh Nu-Emanuel forfeiting to Montague. Standings list Sinclair 12 1 3 and Shelton 13 7 6 among others.
The Apera group Cossett Cunning ham took first place at Prairie Valley with Mary Guston and Patsy Lasyman of St. Jo finishing second and third. An auction raised $58 for the council. No August meeting. A day with 150 registrants. Mrs. C. E. Ayres, Reporter.
Three old steers from S. M. Prater ranch sold last week at 17 cents a pound, averaging 1 058 pounds and about $179.52 per head. Earlier, 24 white face steers from the same ranch averaged 1102 pounds and sold on the Fort Worth market for 16.40 per hundred plus 50 cents subsidy, with no feed purchased for the animals.
At a well attended American Legion gathering last week L. D. Wells was chosen as Post Commander with S. E. Chandler as Adjutant. He succeeds Jim Stewart in a successful prior year. Other officers include L. D. Robinson first vice commander E. A. Hill second vice commander A. L. Kincer finance officer J. B. Coffield sergeant at arms L. G. Washburn historian R. L. Garrett chaplain Norman Branson child welfare officer and H. F. McDaniel post service officer. An inauguration program and barbecue with Tommie Whitecotton as arrangements chairman will mark the new officers.
Work is underway to remodel the First National Bank building and add a large vault extending to the basement and a story above. The rear wall had cracked and was braced, now removed, with plans for a modern extension once materials arrive.
A rare intense storm drenched Bowie on Saturday night with four inch totals in parts of the city. Hail and strong winds accompanied the rain, easing a strained water supply by prompting residents to curb lawn watering while the city boosts pumping to meet domestic and firefighting needs. The area extended northeast only halfway to Montague. The city now has about 300 more water connections than last year, keeping pumps running around the clock to supply reservoirs.
The last day for a school transfer is July 31. Students hoping to attend Bowie Public Schools without tuition must contact Superintendent I B Williams at Montague or Superintendent Walter B Alexander at Bowie.
