The Bowie area notes fifty two women are employed at the Bowie dress factory. Other items include housing rental demand, calf markets with prices 25 to 24 cents, and local news on library editions, farm labor, and Montague county tax assessments set at five dollars per acre.
Duwayne Brooks announces in The News that he has bought Homer Bishops vast interest in Bowie Furniture Co and now runs the store full time after resigning from Lone Star Gas Co where he was a salesman for eight years. The partnership with Homer Bishop ends as Brooks operates the store solo.
Bowie Chamber of Commerce reports many people filed for work in the proposed Bowie shoe factory. Officials urge both men and women to submit applications even without factory experience as the plant would operate 52 weeks a year producing play shoes.
Jurors for the session of district court starting Monday have been drawn. Names include J. C. Durham Bonita Mrs. David Minor Montague Charles Thompson Saint Jo Adrian H. Parker Saint Jo Ruth C. Hutson Saint Jo, and many others from Bowie Nocona Forestburg Saint Jo Montague and nearby towns. Seven civil and equity cases are on the docket for trial when court convenes with cases including Lanear v Aerial Sprayers Inc. Haney v Traders General Ins Co and others.
Mrs Catherine Russ purchased Mrs Jewell Rice's house on the Fort Worth highway just south of the Henry watermelon garden. She has been living near Alvord and plans to move soon to her new home. She teaches in the Bowie east ward school. her aunt Miss Becky Walton of Forestburg resides with her.
David Gene Lindsey 17 died instantly in a two vehicle collision three miles east of Decatur Tuesday morning. William Bell 19 was seriously injured. Oliver Smith 21 of Vernon drove the truck. Lindsey and Bell had been in Fort Worth. Bell remains hospitalized with chest injuries and bruises.
Bowie Jaycees announce a three night carnival on the parking lot north of the high school gym. Proceeds fund the Jaycee civic improvements. Ten rides provided by Curtis Litton of Dallas, with in-house concessions at 25 cents per ride and 10 cents per item. Proceeds to support county fair preparations in September.
Funeral services for 17 year old David Gene Lindsey fatally injured in a Tuesday morning car accident near Decatur were conducted Wednesday at the Church of the Nazarene conducted by Rev. T. F. Keesee. Burial was in Lindale cemetery. Lindsey, born in Bowie February 26 1940, lived here all his life and worked in Fort Worth and Bowie prior to his death. Survivors include parents O A Lindsey two brothers Glenn Altice and Jimmy Wayne of Bowie three sisters Joyce Ann Janice of Bowie and Oneta Luster of Smithfield. cousins were pallbearers.
Mr and Mrs Richard Golden and daughters of Chicago Illinois and Mr and Mrs C H Bennett and daughters of Angleton have been visiting at the home of Mr and Mrs G H Golden.
Mr and Mrs Harold Beaver and family from Skellytown spent a week visiting the Butler and Garlington families. Betty Sullivan, Mrs Beavers niece, who had joined them in Skellytown, returned home.
Rotary Wednesday noon featured a peach program led by Ariel Randolph. Rep. Tony Fenoglio visited as editors Col Oran Stovall and Supt C D Allen issued the first Rotary Bulletin. Randolph hosted a panel with Clarence Newsom and Pete Pryor and displayed Dixigem and Ranger peaches before distributing samples to Rotarians.
The responses discuss marketing locations in Dallas Fort Worth and Wichita Falls and issues like winter dormancy and crop failure. A good national average is three crops in five, minimum 50 acres to justify equipment, three peach varieties, costs around 225 dollars per acre to start, harvest labor as the main problem, and large plantings could ease labor shortages.
Pete Smith of Bowie and J R Gill of Vashti have purchased the R E Cozart Butane business. They leased land from G G Cummings and John Black on the Fort Worth highway and have begun building the fuel tanks foundation work.
Prof. Woods of the Southwestern Baptist Seminary in Fort Worth will replace Roger Cole as director of music at First Baptist Church this Sunday. He will direct the choir sing a solo at the morning service and lead junior and senior high choir rehearsals. Cole accompanied a church group to Glorieta New Mexico for a Southern Baptist music camp and will direct Sunday School music there. Woods is professor of piano at the Seminary and a Oklahoma Baptist University graduate with a master's from Indiana University. He taught four years at Union University and is pursuing a doctoral degree at Indiana University.
The Bill Henson family has returned from a vacation trip to Florida.
Max Shelton acted as city secretary at the council meeting Monday night in the absence of Nancy Clarke who was on vacation.
Leon Hankins and G. C. Green asked council to build a half mile road to connect Green estate land cut off by the filled lake. Mayor Greenwood named a committee to study the issue, with Brooks Winn Bert Cassle and Cr Young to report back.
The city council voted to pay one fourth of the radio cost for the warden Joe Pigg car with the civil defense department covering half. The balance would come from county and city funds, totaling near six hundred dollars. The radio would help Pigg relay information to officers, especially at the lake, and wardens are urged to cooperate with police.
City council voted Monday night to extend a two inch water line to Meyer Park to service rest room facilities in the youth building. The project aims to improve park amenities and meet utility needs for the new facilities.
At the regular School Board session, Bonnie Brannon of Cleburne was elected counselor and Arthur A. Fisher will teach mathematics. Brannon plans to move to Bowie with her mother around August 20. Fisher comes from Callesbury with a B S and master’s, plus doctoral work toward a math major with chemistry minor. The board cut 20 feet of ground in front of the school for parking. Roofing for the high school is contracted to George Menasco of Wichita Falls, with work starting soon amid summer repairs including new classroom flooring walls and woodwork paint and a new air conditioner in the superintendent’s office.
Mrs. Willis Stokes was returned from Wichita Falls where she spent several days visiting in the home of her son and family Mr. and Mrs. Larry C. Stokes and a daughter.
The city will buy four sirens to place in four town sections so residents hear the warning during storms and fires. Council authorized the purchase Monday night. Fire chief Alex Griffin outlined the plan. current siren is worn out though kept in the business district.
George Rucker reports water flow issues on city lots by the swimming pool and presents a plat for water channel charges tied to paving the program. Col Oran Stovall says Cummins Street owners near West Wise to Pecan want paving and curbing, with checks ready, while water line changes delay street work. he offers to bid on the water work if invited. No action was taken.
Sept C D Allen urged the city council to begin curbing and guttering around the school grounds immediately so work could finish before the new term. The Board of Education will pay about eight thousand dollars. The council ordered street work near the school after Orchard street is finished. Supt Allen noted the district cannot pay for paving in front of the McDaniel property which it does not own, but a plan may be worked out for Till street paving with Mr McDaniel’s property option still unsettled.

Dispositions show numerous transfers and infant cases among the discharged.
At a regular meeting the council voted a special summer rate starting next bill date for the first 20 000 gallons at 7 75 with any usage over 20 000 billed at 15 per thousand through August 31 year olds in town including the school grounds. No action on Bowie Gaso line Plant rate. Mayor Greenwood and most council members present kept session past midnight.
Mrs. Emmett Thorne, Mrs. Opal Smith and Mrs. Betty Culverhouse are in Lubbock this week for Dietitians School at Texas Tech. Thorne runs cafeterias at the high school and east ward school while Smith and Culverhousehouse work in the cafeterias. All have worked with the schools for many years.
City authorities decided to evaluate used tractors and dump trucks with plans to purchase one of each for street department use.
Congratulations announced for several July births. Rick ey Glenn to Jim and Mrs. Bagwell of Bowie, Sheryl Jean to Wayne and Mrs. Miller of Fort Worth, Kevin Kirk to Pvt. Kirk Walker and Mrs. Walker of Bowie, and Toy Louise to Mr. and Mrs. Fox of Bowie born July 7th. Kevin Kirk weighs 9 pounds 11 ounces.
