Fred Bloom Receives High Scout Award in Wichita Falls

Auto Crash Uproots Posts on East Wise Street Curve
Last Saturday a car wreck at the curve in the 500 block of East Wise Street uprooted two roadside posts before the vehicle was stopped by a third. Driver O. E. Brown of Houston, en route to Wichita Falls, was uninjured in the 1953 Chrysler four door sedan. Chief Myer noted the posts were installed after a decade old wreck that sent a truck off the road into Mrs. Mary Presley’s house, which was displaced six inches.

Two Trucks Burn at Melvin Barlow Service Station
Fire at the Melvin Barlow Service Station destroyed a Chevrolet Texaco gasoline truck and a seismograph truck while firefighters worked to prevent spread to a nearby house on Sanders Street. Gasoline leaked as flames raged and dynamite caps exploded, with onlookers kept at a safe distance.

Guard Unit Receives Federal Inspection Rating
The local National Guard unit faced a federal inspection Wednesday night at 7 30. Col. Jack I. Davis of the 4th Army Inspector General led the visit based from Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio. The unit of 90 men posted an 84.7 attendance record toward an excellent rating. Results will follow Ft. Sam notification. The National Guard Bureau awarded a 1953 efficiency and training certificate. Regular meetings are Wednesdays at 8. Dinner guests included Mr and Mrs Bill Koonce and others in Wichita Falls Friday.

Jaycees Pay Your Poll Tax Drive In Bowie
The Jaycees sponsor a pay your poll tax drive in downtown Bowie on January 23 and 30 with a booth and public address system. Members will sell poll tax to voters and ribbons reading I have paid my poll tax will be given. The effort is a cooperative program with Eva Giles city assessor and collector and Billy Neildt JC president, thanking city officials merchants and workers for Bowie’s holiday decorations.
