Excitement rises in Nocona as Rogers-Rogers No 1 well, on L Lenon survey Abstract 483, 1 mile west of Nocona, begins flow after plug removal. Leasing is brisk with royalties up to 200 per acre. Oil tests at 45 gravity. potential production around 750 barrels daily anticipated.
Harper Knight and Dr. Dodsworth presented a program at the Morrow Grill luncheon on Club Service duties and student banners. R. K. Ayres led a song with Colleen McDaniels at the piano before the meal as Boy Scouts executives visited.
The Lions Club Thursday meeting at the club room postponed the regular Ladies Night. Lovette presided and named a committee to arrange the event with Ratliff and Suddath as chairs. Deal of the Austin Bridge was a visitor. about forty members attended.
J Kelton, former Bowie mayor, died at his Denton home Thursday afternoon at 2 o clock. Funeral services are set for Friday at 2 in Denton at Smith Funeral Home with burial to follow.
City election set for April 4 1989 names listed include Bi Nore for Mayor J McNatt for City Marshal Tandy Welch also appears among nominees in official notices.
At Texas A and M research station the grape program reports 15 native Texas wild grape species, 2801 Carman plants planted in February and March with 2264 starting and 2252 thriving after summer drought. Another 456 plants across 98 varieties were set, 426 starting and 421 surviving, plus 111 cuttings. The program studies pruning, fertilization, terraces, cover crops, spraying, and uses a terrace planting system. The lab, part of the State Experiment Station, is Texas sole grape research facility and aims to explore juice, blends, jams, syrup, by products, tannin, and landscaping applications.
E A Boyd celebrated his 84th birthday with about 70 relatives and friends at a family reunion and open house. Born in 1855 in Hopkins South Carolina he migrated to Texas then Montague county where he farmed near Forestburg before retiring to Bowie. He remains active in farming and manages rental properties.
S Daube and Co begin their January Clearance Sale Friday morning with bargains across all departments. The event promises warm clothing at greatly reduced prices for the family as Bowie heads into winter. Chas Coffield, son of Mr and Mrs Coffield, returned to Baylor University after holidays.
Members of the Future Farmers of America plan their second annual Father and Son Banquet at the high school auditorium Friday night January six at 7 30. Randolph is the principal speaker and Jones Robinson will serve as toastmaster. Committees prepared to handle invitations decorations and arrangements include Olys McNutt Avis Bowden Clifton Pax Melvin Hickman Leon Hickman Burnace Roberts Faulkner Homer Jackson Mick Wright Tillie Chandler and D D Oliver.
Bowie resident J Us McNatt, living in Bowie for about 21 years, declares candidacy for mayor in this week’s Bowie News political column. Born in Montague county, he spent 18 years at Bowie Cotton Oil Mill as bookkeeper and later manager, then 3 years as district seed buyer for Wichita Falls Cotton Oil Co. He has served on the school board for five years, including time as secretary.
Tandy Welch of Montague county has announced his bid for city marshal. He was appointed to fill the unexpired term after Charles Jackson died October 1 and has lived in Bowie for the past 50 years. Previously he worked in night police for four years and in the cotton storage business. his wife and two children are listed in the notice.
Frank Benson manager of the Ritz and Majestic Theatres launches a new Big Bargain Farmers Matinee on Saturdays at the Ritz. Admission is 10 cents to 6 pm, then 2 cents. The issue notes monthly Ritz Majestic calendars on page 7. Dale Eales and M. A. Bryan made a business trip to Henrietta Tuesday.
Bowie is praised as the best place to buy groceries in North Texas due to low prices, large stocks, and well arranged stores. The News urges readers to notice the grocery advertisements in this issue for local bargains and to support Bowie merchants and surrounding territory.
Music lovers in Bowie anticipate Beatrix Mayo a famed mezzosoprano performing at the MacDowell Club second concert of the musical arts series. Mayo whose career includes California and New York opera and symphonic groups brings a broad repertoire from Italian to Russian works. Tickets from the MacDowell Club fund the series and offer the community a low cost chance to enjoy a celebrated artist.
Irad O Miller died in a Dallas hospital after a short illness and was buried Monday at Elmwood Cemetery. Funeral services were led by Rev Finis Cratchfield. He was born Feb 9 1881 in Rockwall County and survived by his widow three sons mother and sister with several Dallas and out of town relatives in attendance.
Rev. E H Mays of the Denton District preached the morning sermon at the local First Methodist Church. In the afternoon he led the first quarterly conference as presiding officiant at the session.
Citizens of Bowie may pay city taxes for 1938 and 1939 without interest until January 31, 1989. Penalties will be added for late payment after the deadline.
Director Sanford invited Bowie High School band of thirty five members to perform at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. They played four selections in the Hotel Adolphus lobby drawing crowds, with “Tiger Song” and “Alexander’s Rag Time Band” earning strong cheers. The Bowie group drew praise from Superintendent Wily Alexander, Dr. J. Dodsworth, and Sam Lovette, who urged proper credit and future inclusion.
Scouts of District 10 Northwest Area Council hosted parents and friends at First Presbyterian Church. Troop 116 presided with colors from Troop 98 Montague and Troop 91 Bowie. Candles, laws, stunts, and games followed, led by R K Ayers.
Dorothy Sunshine Browning age 16 daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G F Browning died Wednesday afternoon at their home about 3 miles west of Bowie. Funeral services were held at 2 p m Thursday at Vashti with interment in Vashti Cemetery Burgess Funeral Home conducted the arrangements.
