Community notes cover Bowie school schedules with a Friday closure for teacher meetings, factory hiring up after a reorganization, Jackrabbit basketball bi district champions in Denton, and upcoming Terrell game. Local incidents include a purse loss and a three lawn sighting near Smythe street, plus travel by air to Cincinnati and Kentucky.
Gordon Cady sold Cady's Men Store in Bowie to Billy F. Neeld who now operates Billy Neeld Men's Store. Neeld, with 72 years at the store, will continue buying for the business and retain existing staff. Cady remains briefly in the shop.
Ground was broken Monday morning for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. in Bowie with a ceremony led by Mayor S. L. Greenwood. Local manager Sam Ogletree and others represented the company on three spades. Bert Cassle won the main contract, Roy V. Garrett the Carrier heating subcontract. Speeches and photos to follow next week.
Two more candidates have filed for Bowie city offices since last Thursday. Bill Morris seeks city marshal as Bill Myers runs for re election. Bud Clark and Allen Guthrie seek councilman Ward two while no one filed for city attorney. Saturday is the filing deadline for Bowie Board of Education and trustees positions. no filings yet.
Jack Lovette announces the 1957 Heart Fund drive in Bowie as chairman. Coin boxes will be placed around town and checks sent to Heart Fund care of Jack Lovette. Funds support American Heart Association programs and local Heart Association activities.
Montague County Fair board and committee chairmen met in the Chamber of Commerce rooms to approve a three day fair with gate free admission. The dates are September 19 to 21, with a rodeo on the final two nights and a sheep division added. Jaycees receive all concessions pending arrangements.
Col and Mrs Oran Stovall attended the parents day program at TSCW in Denton on Sunday. Their daughter Margin Stovall is a student at the college.
Bowie launches its annual Red Cross membership drive with a $2,000 quota. The effort reflects heightened need after disasters in 1955 and 1956. Drive opens Friday morning at Cotton's cafe with volunteers including Mrs. Deaver and listed workers.
Bowie service clubs visit the high school next week during Public School Week. The Rotary club meets Wednesday noon in the Homemaking rooms and the Lions club meets Thursday at 12. Tours of school buildings follow the luncheons. Local women and men named as organizers and participants.
Public School week events announced by area schools include a prize for the room with the most visitors from the Masonic Lodge. East Ward hosts Dad's Night March 7 with a 7:30 p.m. program and parent visits.
Bowie Public Schools announce Texas Public School Week from March 4 to March 9 inviting all citizens to visit and learn about the schools. Supt. C D Allen praises the teaching staff and invites guests to dine at the cafeterias during their visit.
A signal light was installed at East Wise and Mill street on the highway to protect schoolchildren crossing the road and to direct traffic. A warning sign was placed east of the new signal.
Scott Whaley met with the council to review the 1957 58 proposed budget and the city financial position as plans proceed to spend significant funds on the paving program.
Bowie Jackrabbits defeated Northwest 64 to 53 in Denton to win the bi district basketball championship and earn a spot in the regional tournament in Denton this weekend. Jackrabbit scorers included Benny Carver 19 Ronnie Robicheaux 20 James Thompson 17 Wade Dyers and Kenneth Winn 2.
The Bowie Jackrabbits defeated Vernon 89 to 51 on Vernon's court in a nonleague practice game. Bowie's 30th win of the season featured James Thompson with 26 points and Ronnie Robicheaux adding 24.

Bowie Hardware Co fully remodels a two story building at Tarrant and Smythe streets after purchasing from Bud Clark. Owners H. A. Richardson Jr Clifton Parker and James Coffman merge two Smythe street rooms into one large retail space while Carter Whitecotton area gets a lowered ceiling and tile floor. The Tarrar e street Co op room gains a cement floor for plumbing and storage.
City council meeting extended to midnight as officials discuss parking restrictions on Cummings and Wise streets Hutchinson courts and a new water tank purchase from Fort Worth and Denver for road oil storage priced at 75 dollars. Budget figures show paving cost 1.15 per front foot and curb and gutter 2.40 per front foot with property owner signups.
City officers Myers and Roland stopped a bus at West Wise. A passenger agreed to go to the station after officials found six quarts of Old Grandad whiskey in his suitcase. He was fined 131.10 in county court. Archie Brodie faced a whiskey possession for sale case and was fined 100 plus costs. A theft report from an oil lease on the Wichita Falls highway listed towels, oil, gasoline, copper tubing, and a grinding machine stolen. two spare tires were left behind.
Work began Monday on a youth building to be located in Meyer park near Adkins street. Mark High oversees the project to allow easy officer checks during regular rounds.
City Superintendent Robbins was directed to seek bids for a tractor with a backhoe and front end loader. The machine would serve multiple uses and reduce rental costs, enabling a sanitary fill at the city dump grounds as urged by Health Officer Berry Squyres.
Tan Turner spoke before the council requesting removal of the cow lots. Mayor Greenwood and others urged an amicable resolution at the meeting.

At the Monday city council meeting, emergency relief was authorized to remove water from filling septic tanks in the Weatherford and Sansom additions and carry it 2000 feet to a creek. The council also directed plans to extend sewer service to Weatherford and Sansom, including moving the Imhoff plant and routing to the disposal plant.
A contract to cover a 425 foot ditch on North Mill street was awarded to A S Johnson of Henrietta for 1825 dollars. The work will be cement covered and completed promptly before paving. Supt Robbins authorized purchase of cement pipe near the light plant for widening and straightening Pecan street in preparation for paving.
Mr and Mrs W H Thompson from Wichita Falls visited Bowie on Wednesday while searching for a new home as they plan to relocate to Bowie.
Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Medley of Fort Worth on the birth of son Tommy Ray at Bowie hospital weighing 7 pounds 12 ounces born Monday February 25. He has maternal grandparents O. C. Fox of Bowie and paternal grandparents J. H. Medley of Wichita Falls with great grandmother W. T. Gardner of Bowie and a brother Jimmy. Jalinda Sue weight 6 pounds 8 ounces was born at Bowie hospital February 26 to Mr. and Mrs. Travis L. Marlar.
