M Posey president of the Montague County Fair Association announces tentative plans to hold the Montague Fair on October 7 8 9 and 10 with a carnival secured. Committee appointments have not yet been made.
Continental Oil No 1 Pearl Mueller near Bowie reports lime at 5996 to 6015 feet with a 3 foot dry lime core at 6 033 39 feet. Yowell test near Stoneburg shows gas on 6000 foot stem test while reaming below 6030 feet. Other wells near Stoneburg Montague focus on shale and sand in 4700 to 6500 foot ranges.
The Montague County Ration Board issued tire and tube certificates to Donald Brothers Bowie Geo M Waggonfeller Bonita Aldine Tidwell Bowie Rt 1 M D Gardner Bowie Rt 1 James D Franklin Nocona. Five applications were rejected for improper completion. Sixteen new cars will be rationed in Montague during March April and May as part of a three month plan. Texas total 5522 with Clay and Jack counties each allotted nine. J B Lewis of Bowie named file clerk and typist. board quarters set in the County Auditor’s office.
J. O. Ellington, manager of the Slaughter Drug Company, learned this week of his uncle H. H. McWhorter of Linden Texas death. Funeral services were held Tuesday.
The Majestic Theatre announces a two day Friday Saturday program headlined by Hopalong Cassidy in Wide Open Town with Andy Clyde and Russell Hayden followed by Hurry, Charlie, Harry with Leon Errol. Sunday and Monday offers The Shadow of the Thin Man starring William Powell and Myrna Loy with Latest News and Comedy. Tuesday Bargain Day presents Among the Living with Albert Dekker and Susan Hayward. Wednesday and Thursday show Leon Erroll with Olivia de Havilland in They Died With Their Boots On with Latest News and Comedy.
The Bowie Rotary Club marked its 37th anniversary with a program at Theeorrow Grill. Abe Cline introduced Walter Alexander who spoke on Rotary’s history and mechanics. T. P. Evans recalled the club’s origins, and Pat Patterson of Nocona Rotary attended as a guest.
Fire Chief A C Baccus outlined the latest U S Office of Civilian Defense approved methods for handling air bombs and keeping damage low. He described using sand or water spray, waiting for sputtering to end, and safely removing or extinguishing the device.
The Texas Fire Insurance Department in Austin announced Bowie earned a 20 percent fire record credit. The credit is expected to reduce insurance premiums by about $3,314 in the coming year, based on 1941 premium amounts. The new rating takes effect March 1 and marks Bowie’s highest credit to date, following 10 percent credits in the past two years and 5 percent before that. the last penalty year was 1937.
Sunset farmer Debs Garms, who has played baseball with the Pittsburg Pirates, left this week for Fullerton California to report for duty with the Sacramento ball club in the West Coast League, managed by Pepper Martin. He said he looked forward to playing.
City of Bowie Texas proclaims March 1 through March 6 1942 as Texas Week in homage to Texas Independence Day Alamo Day and Pearl Harbor Rememberance. Mayor I J McNatt urges Texans to observe the week with emphasis on liberty values leadership and service.
Bowie News explains that Charley King will start school census enumeration next Monday to ensure full per capita allotment for schools. The count runs through March and residents should contact King at the City Auditorium basement if a family is missed.
Co. O. Garrett secretary of the Southwest Montague Singing convention announced the annual convention will be held at the City Auditorium on March 22. Further announcements concerning the singing will be made later.
The War Production Board clarifies a freeze on refrigerators on hand or in transit as of 9 am February 14. Retailers may sell up to 100 units or one twelfth of their 1941 retail sales, whichever is greater, with limits if on hand fewer than 100.
Quick action by the Bowie Fire Department limited a Thursday night blaze at Arvil Cantwell’s residence on West Wise Street. Damages were contained and no injuries reported.
Uncle Sam needs junior stenographers in Washington DC with a 120 dollar monthly wage. Potential advancement to senior stenographer at 135 dollars or more. R E Sparkman of Italy Texas approved a pink granite government marker for Captain William Patrick Mabry whose grave lies in Saint Jo cemetery. Mabry recruited from Ellis Hill Navarro and Freestone counties and led his company early in the Civil War. Sparkman seeks unmarked Confederate graves and urges letters with full soldier details.
A tractor owners get together will be held at the High School Auditorium next Monday night March 2 beginning at 8 15 p m. The meeting is informal with no admission or high pressure selling. Moving pictures will cover care operation fuels maintenance and lubrication.
Firefighters extinguished a blaze believed to have started when sparks from the flue fell onto the roof. The flames were caught early and caused little damage.
Memorial services for James Solomon son of Mrs Bonnie Solomon will be held Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. at the Church of Christ. The program includes quartet numbers and talks by John Raymond of Dye Mound and Clyde C Sloan. The American Legion will direct the ceremony. Solomon was reported missing after the December 7 attack on Pearl Harbor but no definite information came to Mrs Solomon until now.
A 35 member Fort Worth business delegation arrives in Bowie inviting readers to the Southwestern Exposition Fat Stock Show from March 13 to 22 in Fort Worth. The group, led by D. Wallis and sponsored by the Sales Managers Club, praises livestock industry gains and meat production needs amid current emergency. The event offers $75,000 in premiums, features a new championship rodeo, and roasts star Roscoe Ates at the Silver Spur. Texas cities are urged to arrange special days, form delegations, bring bands, home town talent, and a pre rodeo concert near the Coliseum.
The wartime sugar rationing program will start within weeks with a massive printing operation. The Government Printing Office oversees 1700 million forms and 190 million war ration books plus consumer and retailer forms and stamps. Printing split across 23 firms, 30 day timeline, safeguards akin to money, with distribution by the Office of Price Administration to state or county agencies.
