Emerson Lyng Jr and Diane Gray are among 176 girls from over 100 high schools chosen for an all girls band festival at TWU Denton. The two day event includes rehearsals and a Saturday 8 p.m. concert in the University auditorium.
The Bowie City Office employs two full time workers and one part time staffer led by city superintendent J R Whately. They handle administration for Police Fire Public Works Street Light Water and Sewer Tax and Executive departments. They process payroll for 36 employees manage bills collect payments and handle trouble calls for utilities.
Teenage magazine sales crew wanders Bowie promising quick money. Police Chief A J Martin spots the group at a service station and halts two who try to cash checks. They flee, are pursued by Martin and Hendriks who fire into the air to disperse them. The teens surrender at a fence, fined for unlicensed door to door sales and resisting arrest. They head north with vows not to return.
Baseball practice started Monday at the high school with 20 Jackrabbits reporting to coach Don Sykes. The opener is March 7 at Graham at 7 30 p.m. Graham visits here March 10 at 4 00 p.m. District play begins April 11 at Carrollton. Schedule updates appear weekly in The News.
Jack Lovette Lloyd Parsons and Carl Shurtleff have filed or will file for election to the Bowie Independent School District Board of Trustees. They compete for two available seats with a filing deadline of March 2.
Bowie Masons and Eastern Star members hold covered dish dinner at 7 p.m. in lodge hall for Washington's birthday celebration. District Judge Louis Holland will be the featured speaker. Members and families urged to attend.
Bowie B Team captured the 5-AAA district title with a 68 to 47 victory over Brewer on Thursday night. They finished 11-1 in district play and 25-2 for the season, led by Jerry Don Forrow with 24 points, Jackie Compton 11, Ray Ratcliff 10, Billy McKinley 8, and Don Dansby 7. half on 39-26 at intermission.
Bowie High School held a February assembly with a one hour panel on How to Study Study Conditions and Study Habits and Use of the Library and Reference Books. The panel included two boys and two girls from each grade with Thomas Ogden as moderator. The next discussion will cover reading classics and over/under achieving insights from Iowa Tests and IQ scores.
The mayor proclaims a city clean-up week with March 15 and 16 set for trash removal. Residents should place trash in suitable containers for quick collection and ensure it is ready by 8 a.m. Wednesday. Areas will be covered only once by the municipal workers.
Lady Lionesses will be honored tonight when Bowie Lions meet with their wives for dinner at Cotton's Cafe. Jon R. Hornaday of Austin, director of Public Relations for the Texas Medical Association, speaks on The Best Medical Care for all Texans and outlines programs to improve care, curb costs, and recruit physicians for a growing population.
Three churches announce singing events this week inviting all. Carter Lake Mission hosts a 2 p.m. Sunday event, Calvary Baptist Church holds a tri county convention Friday at 7 30 p.m., and Free Will Baptist has a 7 p.m. Thursday service.
Conductor Hart Harold Coffman of Fort Worth and Denver was seriously hurt Saturday night when the caboose he rode derailed and burned near Alvord. A freight car ahead, out-of-order, caused a draw bar drop and the derailment. Coffman appeared to be thrown clear and was taken first to Bowie Hospital then airlifted to Wichita Falls for further treatment.
Mayor J. A. Spears proclaims March 12 to March 18 as Bowie Garden Club clean-up week urging citizens to join city beautification efforts through flower and shrub plantings and community cleanup.
