Community leaders attended a Majestic Theatre event in Harlow for a screening of The Ten Commandments while locals shared fair poultry notes from Montague County. Biodata on lakes, a Bowie contractor, and a Jordan bound Bible gift add local color.
The Bowie dial telephone building will host an open house on March 6 from 2 to 5 pm and 6 30 to 9 pm. Local manager Sam Ogletree invites all residents to explore the new building and dial equipment with exhibits and guided tours explaining the switching system.
A group of junior high students under Mrs Minnie Precise are preparing for the county spelling bee to be held March 27 at 2 00 p m in the district courtroom Montague The Bowie spellers elimination contest will be held probably mid March according to E C Lemons junior high principal.
Old City Lake parcels have been surveyed and are available for lease at 10 dollars per year payable in advance. One hundred fifty foot water front lots are marked, with twelve already leased. Leases are handled at the city office.
Julia Clisbee tripped at her Bowie home Saturday night and broke two bones in one foot. She reached the phone for help and was taken to Bowie hospital. Her daughters Mrs Milton Newmann of Okatche Oklahoma and Mrs John LandFair of Dallas are visiting. their father was longtime Bowie dentist Dr Myron Rose.
Bowie high school basketball team the district 2A 9 champions will face Lake Worth in the men's gym at Denton on Tuesday night for the bi district championship. Start time 8 p m adults 1 ticket sales through Supt C D Allen.
Judy Neal daughter of Mr and Mrs C A Neal was voted basketball queen at Bowie High School this week by the Bowie Jackrabbits basketball team. Judy is a sophomore student.
Centennial committee met at the courthouse to finalize Montague county observances for the 100th birthday, including queen contests for 1858 and 1958, booster trips, a historical souvenir book, and limits on out of county advertising. Contest rules set ages and residency, entry fee of one dollar, and voting at one cent per vote.
Bowie Centennial committee will convene at the Bowie Chamber of Commerce room Monday at 7 30 p m chaired by Mrs JoAlan Spears. Centennial representatives from Bowie clubs are expected to attend and clubs with no named representatives are urged to enroll now.
The annual Montague county 4-H Rifle Contest for 4-H boys will be held Saturday at the National Guard Armory in Bowie beginning at 8 30 am. Each boy will shoot ten rounds at four targets in four positions prone sitting kneeling and standing. The Camp Fire girls will continue selling candy through February 25 due to the bad weather delaying their fundraising effort.
National Guard personnel and adult leaders assist County Agent Wylie Roberts in conducting the annual Rifle Contest in April at the county fairgrounds.
Bowie Rotary club elected new officers and three directors on Wednesday. Officers named are President Harlow E Tibbetts Vice President Jack Lovette Second Vice President Harold Cunningham Secretary treasurer Errol Eggleston. Directors named Harper Knight Jack Lovette and Ernest Chandler will assume office in July to attend district conferences.
Mr and Mrs Roy Slaughter attended the gift show in Dallas at the start of the week.
Chapter 1 selects Bobby McKinley as its beau. He is a sophomore on the A basketball team and an outstanding player this year. Chapter 2 names Lee Cordell as its beau. He is a freshman on the A string, vice president of his class and a student council member.
Joe Pullis a former Nocona high school student now at NTSC Denton is invited to perform two drum numbers on Lawrence Welk’s TV program Monday night February 24. Pullis earned national honors as a high school drummer last year.
Mrs. Marie Moore, who died in a one week old automobile accident at Portales New Mexico, was a niece of L. L. Roberts of Bowie and a sister of Elmer Cummins of Fort Worth.
Mayor S L Greenwood invited a State Board of Health representative to Bowie to inspect 100 acres offered by Roy Sanders Jr and Bob Posey as a trade for the current dump grounds. The land lies four miles from Bowie and near the watershed of Big Sandy feeding Lake Amon G Carter. The visit aims to assess any impact on Bowie water supply from a sanitary fill on the site.
Brooks Winn agrees to run again for Bowie City Council from ward two, joining S. P. Wall and Sid Godfrey as incumbents seeking re election. No school board candidates have filed yet. filing closes March 5 with five voter petitions, while Dr. B. H. Roberts and Bob Welch term ends this year.

Leonard Heath, born and raised in pre cinct two, seeks the county commissioner seat. Son of Norman Heath, longtime manager of Montague Farmers Co op, he is a Bowie High School graduate (1945) who worked as an FBI cooling clerk (1945–1950), spent a year at Carter & White cotton market, and has the last two years worked in oil fields. He will make a formal announcement later.

The Fort Worth and Denver railroad abolishes a Bowie cashier and telegrapher post held by Ed Yager and the swing job of W. C. Beverley as of tomorrow. Bowie officials protest citing a decline in business. Yager bids from Bowie to Childress and Beverley plans to move to Clarendon. Depot hours set 9am to 5pm and midnight to 8am under the new arrangement.

Mr and Mrs Weldon Brashear are remodeling their Lee Tucker ranch house they recently acquired in a town trade. They are altering partitions adding a bath installing an electric kitchen and replacing the roof with white material.
