A New York dispatch notes Bowie Texas needs more housing as growth surges with new projects and industries. Residents urged to plan and build modern apartments houses or duplexes to meet demand.
An all melon growers meeting is set for 3 00 p m today Friday February 20 at the Forestburg schoolhouse. County Agent Wylie Roberts says the session covers all phases of production and marketing with Texas A M Extension Service horticulturist John Hutchison conducting. All melon growers are urged to attend.
Little Miss Cathy Lynn arrived Friday February 13 at 10 22 a m in the David L Whatley home. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Huff Cloer of Bowie and Mrs Addie Whatley of Wichita Falls.
At a special meeting Floyd J. Harris a poultry and produce dealer of Saint Jo was appointed Justice of the Peace to succeed W C Pedigo who resigned.
Work began this week on an eighteen unit motel commissioned by B Chaffin after purchasing a 120 by 135 foot lot on East Wise Street from Blackie Beasley. The tile brick air conditioned building will include modern features. A L Hudson of Decatur is building contractor, with a 90 day completion target and ten to fifteen workers.
The Chamber of Commerce launched a membership campaign Wednesday with Elton Hill as chairman. He met a large group of workers at the C. of C. office as efforts aim to double membership and boost contributions from current members.
At a Monday City Council meeting an ordinance called the regular city election for Tuesday April 7. Candidates include Roy Sanders for mayor and Lloyd Butler Frank Underwood David Moyer Joe Overstreet for aldermen. Bill Myers and S V Rosenbaum filed this week for city marshal Rosenbaum currently night watchman.
Monday February 23 will be a legal holiday in Bowie. The First National Bank and Bowie Post Office will be closed all day with only one city delivery and regular parcel post delivery. Windows closed and no rural delivery.
Mrs. L P Hightower travels to Weatherford on Wednesday night to attend the funeral of her step mother Mrs. W E Evans.
The Henry Palmour residence near Brushy was destroyed by a blaze Tuesday at 5 15 pm. Fire units from Bowie arrived too late to save the house, with only a washing machine spared. Palmour, a Bowie school bus driver with five children, and all others escaped injury. He had prior work at Bowie Grocery.
Bowie district 12 AA champion Jackrabbits host district champion Springtown Cagers in a non conference game. Girls action starts with Reserve at 6 and Varsity at 7 with Bowie boys and Springtown boys to follow at 8 15. The games precede the Jackrabbits trip to Denton for regional title defense. Bowie crushed Olney 80 48 in their last district outing.
Mr and Mrs Nathan Epstein of Birmingham Alabama were guests of Mr and Mrs Samuel E Hyatt Thursday. The Epsteins were en route to Los Angeles California for a three weeks visit.
The Bowie Cottontails finished the season undefeated at 10 0 to claim the 12 AA district title. They outscored opponents by an average of ten points per game and will return six players next year. They head to the Denton Invitational Tournament February 27 28 at Denton Junior High Gym with coach Buck Krauss guiding the squad.
Bowie Business and Professional Women play Bowie Lions at Bowie Gym Monday February 23 at 8 30 pm. Proceeds aid the swimming pool fund with Miss Pat Bradley coaching and Melba Cagle as a key opponent. Montague All Stars meet Bowie at 7 30 pm in an additional inter esting matchup.
Constable J C Hendrix reported 28 cases filed in the City and Justice of the Peace Court this week. In the County Court one DWI case was filed. An Oklahoma man was arrested February 12 in Jacksboro after a minor accident near Bowie Drug Store. he was detained and charged in Montague County Court with a heavy fine. Hendrix investigated four accidents, most involving no licenses, with numerous speed and driving violations noted.
Mr and Mrs O E Harwell of Garner visited in the home of Mr and Mrs Ike Parks on Sunday.
Sheriff Tom Lindsey reports six Bowie youths aged 14 to 18 confessed to a spree that included Fern Dale Creamery, Gary Nees Lumber, Shamburger Lumber, Bowie School District tax office basement City Auditorium, Griffin Drug Store, and D-H Industrial Supply. Loot ranged from 2.25 to about 100 dollars. no loss found at the Old Age Pension supervisor office. The six were in county jail by Wednesday. three are in school.
Starting Monday morning February 23 the C. H. Parker Store in Bowie will observe the week long thirty six year anniversary with anniversary specials across all departments. Parker Food Markets began thirty six years ago by C. H. Parker now run eleven stores in North Texas including Wichita Falls Bowie Archer City Iowa Park Vernon Burkburnet and Olney. C E Newsom is manager of the Bowie market.
Pete Hill was Thursday considered in serious condition following several heart attacks. He has been in Bowie Hospital about a week.
Bowie Church of Christ schedules a special Gospel series by Weslie Mickey from Fort Worth March 1 to March 11 with daily services at 10 am and 7 30 pm.
Valuable equipment has arrived in Bowie for a large oil and gas industrial plant to be built nearby. Site details are being finalized with multiple locations under consideration. The project will employ 150 to 200 workers during construction and 25 to 30 daily afterward, producing roughly 20 million cubic feet of gas daily and products such as gasoline propane and butane.
The annual Federal Inspection of Company A 49th Recon Br 49th Armored Division was led by Col. Alphonse A. Greene with Major Thomas Lt Col Hefflefinger Major Austin and Capt. Waldrip. The company under 1st Lt. L. L. Jett was 100 percent in attendance for this inspection. Rating will be announced in a few days.
More room added in a Stephens Furniture building with walls pushed back to enlarge showroom for living room furniture and appliances.
Howard Wheeler, local realtor, opens an 18 acre tract on Rock Hill Road just south of Bowie for home sites. The first unit is graded and staked, with a 100 water well promising ample water. School buses and mail delivery will serve the area amid high elevation and attractive surroundings.
