Farmers are urged to boost peanut acreage to over 5,000,000 acres this year up from 4,000,000 in 1941. The Agriculture Department emphasizes growing edible oils to replace coconut and olive oil cut off by war. This is the largest percentage increase targeted among commodities under the war production campaign.
The United States Marine Corps calls older men ages 30 to 50 to enlist to relieve younger troops. Ex-service not required. exemptions for ex Marines, soldiers, sailors and civilians may apply at local recruiting stations. Local applicants can visit the court house recruiting station. transportation for families and effects to nearest Marine barracks. Corpus Christi or Pensacola, without prior training, will send to San Diego for instruction. Applicants must be of good physical condition.
Montague County Ration Board released purchase certificates at the weekly meeting for tires and tubes including six passenger tires ten truck tires nine tires six obsolete tires and six obsolete tubes. The Bowie registration board led by Rev. A J Quinn and B Breitenhirt reports 97 men registered with 45 registered locally as part of a nationwide drive that could reach 9 000 000 new registrations. Each registrant will receive a number and a drawing for call up likely within a month. A 21 year old Black man from Truscott Texas was the last registrant Monday after a bus was held for him to register at the city auditorium.
Cecil Young was appointed head coach and director of athletics at Saint Jo this week, replacing Muriel Kimbrough who left last Friday to begin military service. A graduate of Abilene Christian College last June, Young previously served as assistant coach at Saint Jo before Kimbrough's resignation.
Friday and Saturday feature Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy in Great Guns and Roy Rogers in The Sheriff of Tombstone. Sunday and Monday present Jimmy Cagney with Bettie Davis in The Ide Came C.O.D. First shows include Pearl Harbor Attack. Tuesday offers Law of the Tropics and midweek shows Fredric March and Martha Scott in One Foot in Heaven.
The All American Rally at the city auditorium Thursday night featured a torch lighting ceremony directed by Hon. Paul Donald with speeches on America at the Crossroads. Teachers and pupils of Bowie Public Schools reported stamp and bond totals while city clubs and institutions shared updates before the audience joined in the National Anthem.
R L Surber of Nocona is appointed chairman of the Montagu County committee for collecting scrap metal and rubber from Texas oil industry sites. Charles F Roeser of Fort Worth leads the national campaign. scrap buys return the material to mills to ease shortages.
Gordon L. Cady cashier of the First National Bank spoke at the Rotary Club lunch on income tax returns and led an open discussion answering questions. He was introduced by Bob Burgess as members were reminded that Rotary International’s anniversary is next week and to attend. Abe Cline and Prentiss Evans, Bowie Rotary charter members, will lead the program with visitors Dr. R. E. Cordes Bowie O. J. Orton Nocona Sam Kruger Wichita Falls and Bob Gilchrist Burkburnett in attendance.
Bowie Chamber of Commerce launches a project to record all new residents. Secretary H. M. Moore and the Board urge locals to notify the secretary’s office at 11 West Wise Street to help greet newcomers and provide services.
Citizens of Bowie are urged to attend a meeting next Tuesday at 8 p.m. to organize a volunteer air raid warning system. Members of the Texas Department of Public Safety will explain the plan and help work out details. Women and men are invited to participate. Remember Pearl Harbor at City Auditorium.
Miss Billie Walker from Mineral Wells will appear in person at the Bowie City Auditorium Saturday February 28. She performs with Sugar Cane and February. A portion of proceeds will go to the Red Cross. J M Thompson of Bowie visits his daughter in Nocona.
An editorial urges Bowie residents to attend next Tuesday at the City Auditorium to form a volunteer air raid warning network. It warns Texas could be a target due to camps factories oil fields and refineries and stresses a nationwide coordinated warning system.
Miss Willene Gadberry of Bowie serves as one of 300 student advisors for new entrants at Texas State College for Women. A home economics representative, she earned the post for scholastic record and department interest. She assists in matriculation and orientation and aids the Advisory Council. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Gadberry and is a college junior.
A large delegation from Fort Worth Fat Stock Show boosters will visit Bowie at 5 15 p m on Friday February 20 to greet residents and provide entertainment. The visit has become a popular annual event drawing a big Bowie crowd and promising one of the year's best entertainments.
William McKinney 30 died Wednesday afternoon at the Ringgold area home of his wife's parents two miles west of Ringgold. Burial followed at Ringgold cemetery. He had been an invalid for a year due to injuries from an auto accident. He is survived by his wife and one child. Rev and Mrs Clyde C Sloan welcomed a son Jerry Paul born Sunday at the local hospital.
Mildred Katherine Stout infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Stout of Ringgold died seven hours after birth on Monday February 16. Funeral services were at the home conducted by Rev. Ples Warren. Interment followed at Ringgold cemetery with Burgess Funeral Home in charge. Survived by parents and grandparents Levy Stout of Ringgold and T. J. McIntyre of Wichita Falls.
Old man Winter delivered a sharp counter-attack Tuesday night lowering temperatures by about forty degrees. The blizzard pushed the mercury to 20 at midnight and 14 by 8 am Wednesday, with Oklahoma reporting 6 below. The hard freeze should benefit fruit trees by delaying development and reducing March frost risk, while rains helped shield wheat and oats.
Mrs. Mary Lucy Perryman is buried at Forestburg Cemetery after dying February 12 at her daughter’s home in Enid Oklahoma. Rev. James H. Westbrook led services with Burgess Funeral Home in charge. Mr. and Mrs. V. V. Overstreet visited with Mr. and Mrs. Charles Knightstep last weekend.
Rex Beard, the Bowie Bank Bandit, killed Deputy Sheriff Wade Willis in the Taylor county jail at Abilene during a doomed escape attempt. Chief Hackney and Sheriff McAdams fired, wounding Beard who is expected to recover. Beard’s capture followed a nationwide crime spree with arrests in Wichita Falls and multiple bank robberies across Texas.
The Internal Revenue Service in Dallas instructs owners on replacing stolen or lost vehicle tax stamps by filing an affidavit to the Dallas Collector W A Thomas. Include stamp purchase date, location, amount, vehicle details, and circumstances. If deemed valid, a certificate will be issued.
The Presbyterian church collects newspapers cardboard magazines and other paper for defense needs. Baled paper is sold to waste paper dealers and used as packing for ammunition and supplies to ensure safe transport. Miss Inez Rudy Miss Lillie Huff Mrs. Harry Karlsberg and Mrs. Mark Campbell attended the Civic Music Association concert featuring French pianist Robert Casadesus in Wichita Falls on Wednesday night.

J H Dearmore 58 longtime Montague county judge and former schoolteacher died in Bowie hospital Friday after a Wednesday heart attack He was buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Montague Survivors include his son Bill Dearmore of Bowie and daughter Mrs Rinnie Hall Altadena California along with three brothers A J Dearmore B W Dearmore and B F Dearmore The deceased served four terms as county judge and was active in local education
The Bowie post office and bank will close next Monday in honor of Washington's Birthday. The general delivery window will be open one hour from 8 to 9 am. No rural deliveries. city morning delivery will occur. Bowie public schools will not observe the holiday.
