Grady Bob Bell 48 died at his Fort Worth home February 12 after a short illness. Funeral services were at Shannon Mortuary in Fort Worth and Smyrna Cemetery with ministers Rev Jimmy Morgan and Rev Kirk Beard. Interment at Smyrna cemetery. Survived by wife Etna Bell son J. H. Bell II, five sisters and two brothers. Bell had worked in the Fort Worth cattle business for sixteen years.
Mrs. Lucyle Dennis of the State Welfare and Old Age Assistance Board moves to Bowie this week to assume responsibility for Welfare work in the Bowie area. She previously served with the Board at Granbury.
Under ODT rules, trucks not used during the last fourteen days of the month must be reported as idle. Blank idle equipment forms will be available at local War Price and Rationing Boards. Operators with idle equipment should obtain, complete, and mail the forms to the Office of Defense Transportation in Dallas, Texas.
The Bowie financial statement reports a $16 100 reduction in bonded indebtedness over the past year and an increase in cash on hand from 25 313 43 to 34 221 34 by February 15 1943. Major improvements include Wise Street widening and paving for 50 000 with about 8 000 paid by city and property owners, plus engine overhaul at 7 000. The city light plant now operates in first class condition, signaling minimal repair costs for years to come.
Former Governor James V Allred from Bowie was submitted by President Roosevelt for appointment as a federal judge. He previously held a federal judgeship before resigning last summer to run for the Senate against Senator W Lee O Daniel.
George Mitchell Evans, 68, died at his Bowie home February 11. Funeral services were held there Friday. burial at Oak Hill Cemetery under Burgess Funeral Home. Pallbearers included Ralph Dunn Virgil Lopks A W Arnold Claire McIntire Kemp Denson Frank Allen. Survived by wife Oneda Evans, mother Mary W. Evans, three sons Luther George and Simey Evans, three brothers Fletcher Sam and S E Evans, and sister Rosie O'Brien.
The rationing order excludes slippers bed room slippers infants soft soled shoes ballet slippers ordinary waterproof footwear gaiters work dress clog toe rubbers lumbermen's shoes from the ration. Rationed shoes include leather and rubber soled pairs obtainable with Stamp 17 of War Ration Book One valid through June fifteenth. Stamp transfers allow any family member to use them if needed and boards may issue purchase certificates in emergencies.
Mrs. Joe Churchman and her son Michael of Dallas join Mrs. Will Gill of Nocona for a visit with Mrs. Julia Slaughter. Gill is Slaughter’s sister, and Churchman is Gill’s daughter.
Members of the Brotherhood of the First Baptist Church will travel to Salona Sunday afternoon to render a program in Bowie area communities. The event starts at 2 p.m. and the public is invited to attend.
J. C. Craig Anderson a longtime Texas printer died at his Bellevue home after a yearlong illness. He worked for the Dallas News in hand set type days, then for Bowie and Sunset papers before ten years at Bellevue News. He is survived by a Bellevue sister and was predeceased by another Bowie sister. No funeral arrangements were announced.
Funeral services for Wesley H. Defoor 42 were held at Briar Creek Cemetery at 4 p.m. conducted by Rev. J F Kilman. Defoor died Thursday at Bowie Clinic from injuries in a highway accident. Born June 8 1901 in Bath County he married Julia Eanes in Crosby County and lived near Bowie since 1931. Survived by his wife two sons William and Raymond and five daughters Wiloa Rachel Ella Ruth Mary Katherine Helen Louise, plus four sisters and three brothers. E W Whitley Funeral Home conducted the services.
A Treasury War Bonds message urges saving ten percent of each paycheck now to fund a new cooking range after the war. It stresses bonds mature with a return of four dollars for every three invested and frames the purchase as supporting a serviceman on the fighting front.
Mrs. L. H. Angove and Mrs. Ernest Benson attended a Red Cross rally in Wichita Falls with national speakers. The event prepared district workers for the Red Cross War Fund Drive starting March st.
Miss Christine Prater of Bowie was sworn into the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps in Dallas in Col. Oveta Culp Hobby’s presence. She joins Hobby’s Texans platoon and will soon report for active duty for non combatant work before five weeks at Fort Des Moines Iowa. Miss Dorothy M. Wiggins of Rt. 1 was ordered to report for WAAC active duty on February 21 and will undergo processing and five weeks of basic training at Fort Des Moines.

Miss Opal Anderson and Miss Hazel Anderson left Thursday for six weeks of study at Ranger to prepare for roles at Consolidated Aircraft in Fort Worth.
Bowie High School and Bowie grammar and high school will host a Victory Concert Monday night February 22 at 8:00 with R. Bill Archer of Southwestern Life Insurance Dallas as speaker. Over 1000 students from instrumental and vocal departments perform to support a war bond drive targeting a $100000 goal. Local clubs and businesses are urged to attend, and center seats reserved for parents of soldiers. Bond purchases may be made at the door or during intermission.
Meredith Miller, son of D. C. Miller of Bowie, enters service January 21 and is stationed at Duncan Field Texas. T/Sgt Leon Brown visits Bowie with family. Brown has been stationed in Roswell New Mexico since May. Jack Wallace enlists in the Navy in Dallas and is sent to San Diego. Harry Lee Sullenger, on furlough, visits Bowie with his mother and grandmother after active sea duty. Two Scruggs brothers receive corporal promotions. Murphy in California and Hamp in Oregon. Gayle Bradley visited Bowie last weekend.

Tuesday offers Allan Jones and Jane Frazee in Moonlight in Havana. Wednesday and Thursday present Clark Gable and Lana Turner in Somewhere I’ll Find You.
The Ration Board warns that most supplemental gasoline allowances B and C cards expire March 1. Motorists must file renewal applications with required information soon, as approvals take time and delays may leave them without gasoline. The board cautions against using original allotments beyond the period and will not grant extra gasoline unless unusual circumstances arise.
