Bowie High School hosts the Rural School tournament February 18 and 19 at the high school auditorium. Twelve teams in each class compete in girls volleyball and boys basketball, with bronze trophies for rural county champions. Event details list matchups, times, and progressing rounds for both sports.
Members of Bowie Masonic Eastern Star lodges observe George Washington's birthday with a program Tuesday night February 22 at 7 45 in the sonic Hall L D Parnell of Wichita Falls will be the principal speaker Mrs Lynn Gartington arranges several entertaining numbers All Masons and their families are invited to attend.
Wade Bond has purchased the Bowie Drug Co business, becoming sole owner. The deal transfers ownership from a prior operator, with the new owner set to operate on Wise and Oak streets in Bowie.
Texas Fire Insurance Commissioner Marvin Hall announced Bowie will have a 10 percent fire insurance credit effective March 1, up from 5 percent last year. Credits react to five year loss ratios and can range from a 15 percent penalty to a 25 percent credit, rewarding fire prevention and reduced losses.
The First National Bank gauge recorded two and a quarter inches of rain in Bowie from morning until five o'clock Monday. Residents expected at least five inches as water covered streets, but the gauge told a smaller total.
W. F. Robinson was the principal speaker at the weekly Rotary Club meeting. He gave an informative talk on Post Office operations in all phases. An invitation from the Nocona Club for a banquet on February 22 was read. Dr J Dodsworth presided and Rev George F Kornegay gave the invocation. Barney Whitehead led a sing song with Miss Melba Culp at the piano.
L D Eakman formally announces his candidacy for county judge subject to Democratic primaries. He states he is 28, a Bowie native, studied law in Bowie and at Texas Christian University, licensed to practice in 1935, and has never held public office. He pledges economy and efficiency, asks for votes, and thanks supporters.
Funeral services for Mrs Arnold Miller were held at the Newport Church with Rev A C Wise of Waco presiding. She died after a severe double pneumonia attack at home one mile south of Newport. Survived by husband and three children Lela nne Wayne and Blaine Lees.
Montague county peach growers met February 10 at the City Auditorium with County Agent E. C. Jameson presiding. A. A. Randolph spoke on soil conservation and peach variety suitability while K. E. Soder noted a recent Texas Experiment Station peach survey of Cross Timber country. Creed Friou of Cleburne discussed the Golden Jubilee peach as ideal for shipping and as a table peach, noting Montague’s level land aids orchard layout.
Bowie townspeople prepare for a four day fall fair from October 12 to 15. The event promises local exhibits and community activities likely overseen by city groups and merchants.
Between October and February 3,759 poll taxes were issued in Montague County. Eighty five exemptions were granted to residents turning 71 during the year. In the prior election year 1936, 4,076 poll tax receipts were issued countywide.
The Bowie Lions Club held a Thursday evening meeting in City Auditorium Rooms with 64 present. M. Posey presided as charges were read against Rev. A J Quinn, leader of the winning attendance contest side. A trial was scheduled for February 17 with Sam Lovette, Dale Eales, and Gayle Bradley named to the arrangements committee.
A Texas Highway Department project at Ringgold combines Highway 2 and 5 with a modified half cloverleaf design. The underpasses for the M K T railroad and Highway 5 improve safety by directing traffic to right lanes and reducing crossing conflicts. The plan, begun March 16 1936 as a Works Progress Administration grade separation job, features 14 feet 6 inches vertical clearance and $95 006 total construction. Oran Speer of Alvord was the low bidder.
The Bowie Fair Association schedules a multi weekend fair on October 12 18 14 and 25 at the Old Reunion Grounds 27 acres with plans for a permanent fair plant and grounds. City officials have discussed utilizing city assets and a 1983 camp erection with over 12000 in materials for permanent exhibit and livestock buildings to attract 4 H clubs poultry and cattle entries.
Funeral services for Mrs. Pace Montgomery were held at 10:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. B Breitenhirt and Dr E W Wright officiating. Born January 8 1861 in Huntsville she lived with her son in Amarillo and leaves a son E Montgomery and daughters Mrs Felix Smith Mrs D B Burns and Mrs E M Stallings among others with six grandchildren and a brother D My Pite of Houston. Attending out of town included families from Huntsville Austin Montague and Memphis.
Newport school auditorium will host a February event featuring a musical jamboree and a fiddler contest. Organizers describe the showcase as highlighting the best local talent in the area.
