First Lieutenant Thomas M. Whitecotton of Bowie, Marine Reserve, receives the Distinguished Flying Cross with two gold stars and the Air Medal with eight stars for actions as the pilot of a Scout bomber against the Japanese in the Philippine Islands in 1944. He served three and a half years, is married with two children, and owns Ideal Grocery and Market.
Work speeds on the parsonage for the Bowie Lutheran church with N B Hamilton as builder in charge. Carpenters donate much of the labor and occupancy is expected within three weeks. An incoming minister may be announced soon.
Sixty two men attended a Saturday night dinner in Morrow's Grill honoring Bud Pickett who has been transferred by Continental Oil Company from Bowie to the Big Spring district. Continental employees and local business leaders were present. Pickett received a tailor made suit of clothes and a golf clubs cart with shoes from friends.
Cities Service Company reports a prolific discovery in Williamson No 1 near Sunset two miles from the county line in Wise county. The 7042-foot well could yield over 500 barrels of 43 gravity oil daily with gas and a potential offset proposed on nearby leases. Neighbors report strong royalty interest, with sales at $400 per acre and $57 000 in royalties sold on part of their 103 acre tract. Williamson family residents and crew from Wyoming are noted among locals.
The Jacksboro Tigers visit Bowie High for the second game of the district 10 A playoff for 1950. Bowie seeks a double-header sweep after beating Jacksboro 57 to 43 in Jacksboro. The Bowie Cottontails also aim to clinch the junior title with key players back from illness and a 24 to 21 win over the Jacksboro Kittens.
Miss Virgie Cowley buys the Sara Seitz Beauty Shop from Mrs. David Seitz who ran it for fourteen years. Cowley, daughter of Stoneburg residents, will operate as Virgie's Beauty Shop with Velma Guston Nola Blakney and Vivian Stout staying on. She plans 4 way hair cuts and pyramid curls and invites old and new customers.
Wingless chickens a new breed drawing wide attention will be shown at Cady Taylor's store on Tuesday February 21. The public is invited to view these birds that have been widely publicized in papers and magazines nationwide.
Sgt E W Pollard, formerly of Bowie and now in Fort Worth, is named among missing crewmen after a Fort Worth B 36 bomber ditched off the British Columbia coast following in flight fire. Seventeen men were later found, with several still unaccounted Thursday morning. Pollard is believed safe after parachuting onto a rocky island. his wife and three daughters reside in Fort Worth.
Charles Gower announces that the Ritz will be shown at the Texan Theatre from February 14 to 24 for remodeling and machine repairs. The regular Ritz schedule will resume on Friday February 24.
Friday and Saturday feature The House Across the Street Roll Thunder Roll. Sunday to Monday present Chicago Deadline. Tuesday shows Drums. Wednesday to Thursday offer I Was a Male War Bride. Friday and Saturday repeat Maneater of Kumaon.
