The Bowie area notes a Texas Ranger talk at Rotary and a 1957 Chamber of Commerce letter from Mrs. Will S. Young. Local events include Bowie High School band concerts with North Texas State College invited, a Band minstrel show, and a planned band trip. Also recounted is 1906 Bellevue cyclone memories and river-lake activity at Amon G. Carter Lake.
Eight class favorites were chosen at Bowie high school last week. Freshman picks include Sylvia Hamilton and Jerry Jan Griffin. Sophomores selected Jan Griffin and Johnny Floyd with Billy Godfrey Patterson Studio noting junior portraits. Seniors Nancy Stubbs and Monte Cooper were named favorites.
Candidates file for mayor and council posts in the city election. Current names include Cantrell S. L. Greenwood for mayor and H. A. Neeld for second ward council. Nancy N. Clarke is city secretary and D. L. Ethredge city recorder with Bill Meyers city marshal. Voting set for April 2 in city auditorium basement. filing ends March 2. Carl Russell and Thomas Evans will not seek re election.
Renne Allred named by the State Board of Insurance Commissioners to try a case against the U S Trust and Guaranty Company. The case is set for tomorrow. Allred previously served as attorney for the Commissioners and will assist on special cases while maintaining his Bowie law practice with Marvin London.
A ground breaking ceremony is planned for next Wednesday at Meyer park for a 20 by 32 foot Youth Building sponsored by the Maids and Matrons club. The event starts at two o clock in the afternoon and the public is invited. The building will feature tile block construction and corrugated plastic lighting areas, located opposite the new brick house of Mr and Mrs Otto Mercer. Burglaries were reported by City Marshal Bill Myers including a Willis Grocery break in and thefts of watches shirts flashlights and cigarettes. A window was shot through during an incident at the Lawyer home. Dr and Mrs C J Dodsworth attended Ellington AFB ceremonies as their son in law Dale E Cartee earned navigation wings and Lt and Mrs Cartee plan to visit before his next assignment at Stead AFB Reno Nevada.
Clay Turnbow bought the Mason and Pecan corner building from C. P. Dodson to tear down and reuse the lumber for a new house. G. W. and A. N. Thomason completed a three bedroom house on La Salle Street and have a second three bedroom home under construction at La Salle and Mason, for sale when finished. Mr. and Mrs. Coy Wadsworth are building a new home on Lamb Street near the Old Couch place with three bedrooms, living room, den, kitchen, one and a half baths and attached garage on four acres.
Masons and Eastern Stars announce a family gathering at the Masonic Hall on Tuesday night of next week to observe George Washington's birthday. A covered dish dinner begins at 7 30 with Supt. D C Allen delivering the program and a film shown afterward.
Bowie telephone exchange operators may work for Southwestern Bell in Wichita Falls and shuttle between Bowie and Wichita Falls. Wayne Palmer, district manager, confirmed the policy allowing Bowie operators to transfer. The company discourages driving about 48 miles but makes an exception for Bowie workers.
Mr. and Mrs. B. R. Giles and Mrs. Cecil Allen traveled from Love Field to Cincinnati after the sudden death of the Giles’ son-in law, Doppler. Mrs. Doppler was Miss Nell Giles. The party judged the air trip fine despite it being their first flight. Mrs. Allen plans to return by Saturday for gift show week.
Bowie High School announces a formal concert on February 21 at eight oclock conducted by Glenn Cunningham. The 90 piece band will perform classical and modern works with soloists Nancy Orton and Norman McDaniel featured. A photo and full program appear in a page one advertisement.
Bowie contractor Bert Cassle has been awarded the contract to erect the new Bowie telephone building on Tarrant street beside Gary Nees lumber yard. The 49 by 81 foot structure costs 72000 dollars and will house dial equipment for upgrading the system.
The district 34 B basketball tournament is at Bowie High School gym this week for boys with Gold Burg beating Byers 76 87 and Bellevue routing Antelope 68 21 as Irby Mayo 34 points and Jackie Vaughan 16 lead Bellevue Midway vs Prairie Valley and Petrolia vs Forestburg set for later games The girls event runs next week at night with 7 30 p m first game Petrolia v Forestburg followed by Antelope v Prairie Valley Thursday features Gold Burg v Byers and Bellevue v Midway
Eight registrants with Local Draft Board 93 Bowie are ordered to report for induction on Tuesday February 19. Names include Larry Lee Bailey William Lee Fletcher J C Roberts Edward Ray Hestenande Tommy Manning Watkins Delbert Dean Pope Dwayne Lee Hill and Gene Arnold Gregg. Bowie city council sets a special 5 PM meeting to take the first legal step in the paving program. Superintendent Robbins was authorized to solicit bids for ditch covering and curbing on North Mill Street near Latham grocery to direct storm flow before paving.
A valve stuck at a well caused an oil overflow at the old lake Sunday night. The spill ignited and the Bowie fire department gained control quickly. Amarillo Oil Co. owner of the equipment puts the damage at about $5,000.
Lee Tucker was burned when a cellar explosion at his Newport highway farm damaged the attached garage but not the house. He was pumping water from the sump and later treated at Bowie hospital. investigators found no definite blame though a butane line leak was noted far from the cellar.
Texas Ranger Lewis C. Rigler told Rotarians they are losing the battle with criminals and urged higher police pay. He spoke at a Wednesday noon meeting with former Ranger Tom Hickman, both from Gainesville. Nathan Gary arranged honors for Mrs. Will Young with a song and Valentine gift. J. C. Lemonds, Bowie High senior, was introduced as Junior Rotarian.
Co. W. Williams purchased the house on the Montague highway built by Bill Hagler. Mr. and Mrs. Williams and their children have already moved in.
Bowie school teams release a near term schedule with events on February 14 at Nocona for junior high teams, February 15 at Jacksboro for Bowie A teams, and February 19 at Burkburnett for Bowie A teams.
The council discussed ward boundaries and confirmed Mason Street as the East North split. The Fort Worth and Denver railroad tracks divide the South ward from the other two.
At Monday night’s meeting the city accepted three identical bids of 2.23 dollars per foot for eight inch water pipe. Viking Supply Co. of Dallas supplied the pipe for use on Walnut street to Kimbrough corner and Cady corner, with the remainder for Wilbarger street in the south part of town.
City Attorney Jack Lovette reports about six thousand dollars in delinquent taxes. roughly 472 dollars collected recently as the city plans suits to recover larger bills. Four taxpayers owe about one third of the total, and one individual is behind 750 dollars.
Jaycees consider running all concessions at the Montague County Fair with a decision due at the regular meeting at the Legion Hall tonight. Dr. B H Roberts says hiring rides and operating stands would require manpower while a membership drive proceeds. Attendees at regional JC meetings and local director breakfasts are noted along with visitors from Texas City who attended a funeral in Paducah.
A list shows numerous patients admitted to a Bow ie area hospital including H. H. Davlin John A White Co D Donald E F Bradfield and Marie Ellis among others. Separate discharge note lists patients released such as M C McWhirter J L O Neal and infant Stephen Ray with several names repeated.
Rev Donald Wood of Sunset has been called as pastor of the First Baptist church in Montague. He fills the vacancy left by Dr Jase Jones resignation. The parsonage is being redecorated and Rev Wood and his family will move once it is finished.
Bowie Camp Fire girls and Blue Birds report strong success selling candy since last Friday. One group sold out and ordered more as the sale continues through Monday February 18.
Fort Worth couple welcome son James Ellis born Feb 7 in Fort Worth hospital weighing 8 lb. Grandparents J W French and H E Henning.
