Second Monday brings a good Bowie crowd despite north wind and clouds. Horse swappers farmers produce sellers and peddlers set up with minor law enforcement issues over a new peddlers ordinance. One violator faced court but left town after promising to cease and no fine was paid. Next trade day falls on the same date in March with planting season drawing farmers to buy stock tools and seed.
The Bowie community reports 299.53 in Red Cross Flood Relief contributions from Thursday Club South Ward School staff and students and local residents. Donors include W T Gardner Mrs W R Potter F J Dixon Lyle H Brandt W E Carter and Donald Mann. Ringgold sends 113.36 by mail via W W Gilmore local treasurer.
G A Steers recently arrived from Vecatur now heads G O Slaughter and Co drug store, one of Bowie's oldest businesses. Owner Mr Slaughter retires for rest while keeping ownership and plans to farm on Newport road. Steers is a seasoned pharmacist and well received as a new town citizen.
Austin Woolsey son of Mr and Mrs R T Woolsey of South Bowie died at Bowie Clinic Hospital at 11 pm Wednesday Feb 10 from pneumonia after a flu relapse. He was 15, a Bowie High School junior and letterman on the 1956 57 football squad. Funeral 2:30 pm Thursday at Church of Christ, interment Elmwood Cemetery. Survived by parents a brother Harold Loyd a sister Augusta plus brothers Ocie and several sisters in Bowie and Wichita Falls.
Bowie Boy Scouts observe National Scout Week with a district football of activities. A Court of Honor is highlighted as G L Griffin succeeds Leslie Spiers as committee chair. Fort Worth Area Council meeting planned for Feb 16. Hart Oil shuts down drilling near Stoneburg due to delivery delays. plan calls for 3500 to 4500 feet depending on showing.
The new residence of Mr and Mrs BE C Heard on Tarrant Street opposite the First Christian Church is under rapid construction by E H Kelly and crew. The nine room house will feature a large hall basement broad veranda brick veneer exterior and a modern convenient interior.
Holcomb county tax assessor reports 2172 poll tax receipts and 21 executions to January 81. This equals a little over half of last year’s 4077 qualified voters with 207 exemptions for youths turning 21 before January 31, 1936. Property tax data pending, but expected to exceed prior year as December and January collections improve. Penalties apply for late payments with rising rates through June and beyond.
The January term grand jury was convened in special session Feb 5 by Judge E C Hall to probe law violations not acted on at the regular session. Eight indictments were returned, four set for trial and four held for next term, with 26 criminal cases disposed of to date. The week began with civil docket trials.
Valley View and Ringgold led the Montague county basketball chase in Bowie last Friday and Saturday. Ringgold vs Saint Jo and Bonita vs Valley View produced high scores in volleyball. Winners advance to the district meet at Wichita Falls with games slated for February 19 20 for basketball and February 26 27 for volleyball. Eighteen schools competed across the county.
Johnny Free, who sold his Garlington building restaurant and is adjacent to Bowie Grocery Co., opens a confectionery and cold drink store in the Giles building formerly occupied by the 8 P Johnston Candy Kitchen. New owners of the Free restaurant are Herbert Stack and Bill Dearmore.
Carroll Green builds two cabins near his new filling station on East Wise street as the start of a tourist camping place on the newly paved highway entering Bowie from the south. He plans more cabins and a plug‑in for trailer travelers as the season grows.
Ben J. Humphries known as Uncle Ben died last Sunday at his brother George A. Humphries home three miles west of Bowie. Born December 28, 1870 in Etawah County Alabama, he lived in Bowie about 30 years. Funeral at Burgess Funeral Home with Rev. George F. Kornegay. burial Briar Creek cemetery. Surviving: brother and several sisters and numerous relatives in Oklahoma and Texas.
Miss Lovice Johnson the daughter of Mr and Mrs M Johnson has accepted a position with the Unemployment Division of the Social Security Act in the Capitol offices at Austin Major D B Burns is mentioned in connection with the article
The Bowie Lions hosted their ladies at the Morrow Coffee Shop grill room last Thursday for a chicken dinner with Ross S. Covey of Sweetwater as principal speaker. Out of town guests included Lions Thatcher from Chicago and Kipliver and Spell from Wichita Falls, among others.
City Marshal Charley Jackson announces candidacy for re election in Bowie. He highlights a six year tenure as an alert and fearless peace officer and pledges to continue protective measures for town welfare and citizen safety.
Bowie citizen Robert Murphy announces his candidacy for alderman in the Third Ward. He founded and edited the Bowie Booster for fifteen years, now sold to The Bowie News, and promises careful, economical city administration for the next two years.
Remodeling began the first week of January at the J. A. Brite Dry Goods Store. Interior work is finished and adds space in the ready to wear and millinery departments. The building is reroofed this week.
Bowie merchants welcome the new owners of The News with substantial advertising patronage. The paper notes CIA News Service already in use and promises future improvements as business justifies. A list of firms placing ads this week is included, showing broad local support.
J. L. Barnes Wetsell Bros of Bellevue P. S. Stallings & Co Ferndale Creamery Morrow's Coffee Shoppe Radio Service Co Sanitary Bakery Coca-Cola Bottling Co are listed as active local firms. The note groups varied enterprises across the region, indicating a bustling commercial scene.
With under two months until Bowie’s annual city election, candidates announce for mayor, city marshal, city recorder, attorney, secretary, and one councilman from each ward. Hold-over aldermen are Lynn Garlington, Joe Spears, and Dave Worley. Terms expire for Greenwood, Cady, and McMurry along with Paire, Jackson, Hays, Bryan, and Wood. Election date is the first Tuesday in April.
Friends of J C McMurry announce his candidacy for Bowie mayor in the April 6 election. A longtime resident since 1898, he served four years on the City Council and was twice alderman from the 3rd Ward, pledging economy and fair treatment for taxpayers.
Word from Texas Tech in Lubbock says Bob Welch son of Mr and Mrs Tandy Welch of this city earned next to the highest average in the Department of Animal Husbandry only one point behind the top student. It is his first year in college and the Dean praised his hard work and studies.
Mrs. A J Coffman and her 10 year old son Paul of Nocona Route 2 were admitted Monday with pneumonia and both are very ill. Mrs R T Woolsey is seriously ill with pneumonia and was brought to the hospital Wednesday noon. J M Zuber of Newport admitted last Thursday for injuries from a W P A project in Jack county and is improving satisfactorily. Mrs L W Doughty recovering from February 1 operation. Mrs L W Roland returned home February 7 after major surgery on January 26. Eugene Stom son of Mr and Mrs C O Stom operated for ruptured appendix January 22 and returned home February 7.
Brown and Root crews workers began the drainage system at Bowie Lake yesterday to connect dam seepage with the sediment basin. Sixteen men are employed for about a week, and the notice states the construction company’s contract is now completed.
Mr and Mrs Rex Calaway depart Wednesday for a motor journey to Mexico City and other points in Old Mexico. They will visit Mrs Calaways sister in law Mrs G S McLaughlin in Mexico City and plan a three week trip including a Valley stop before returning to Bowie.
An auction sponsored by the Bowie Chamber of Commerce will feature horses and other surplus goods with free admission for farmers and area residents. Col. Mack Winsett serves as auctioneer with bidding starting at 2 p.m. No seller fees are charged. Also, Jack O Diamonds De Lay will perform a free escape act, claiming a 54 second record. He, 33, unmarried, is a former Marine who has toured nationally and internationally.
The Green place on Rock Hill road, bought by Mr and Mrs M Johnson for a poultry breeding farm, is being moved closer to the road and remodeled into a small country home with a rock veneer finish.
Funeral rites were held Sunday afternoon at the Primitive Baptist Church in Bowie for James Thom as Mayo who died at his home in the Leona community after pneumonia. Burial was in Elmwood cemetery. Mayor Paire helped show Bowie streets prepared for hot top surfacing under a WPA project. Ten miles of asphalt paving and ten miles of graveled streets planned with about 40 men employed on the job.
Preparations for drilling C A Lupton’s J A Brite No 1 located five miles west of Bowie on Ball ranch are delayed by soft ground. The project, an old hole to be drilled 2,500 feet deeper, is expected to be a significant North Texas oil test.
