Miss Birt Leana Seay granddaughter of Mrs. Bonnie Teague of Bowie was honored as the Nocona Rodeo Queen at the Fort Worth Stock Show. She rode with the Nocona riding club in the parade and grand entry, while Nocona Booths drew attention amid a citywide celebration.
The Bowie News adopts an eight column format with a Goss Comet press installed this week. The new press uses roll paper and folds eight pages in one pass. Publication of The Montague County Times has been discontinued and its former Monday and Thursday issues now appear in the Thursday paper.
Miss Donnie Rae Fox daughter of Mr and Mrs Herman Fox of Bowie has joined the Bowie News staff as society and local reporter.
A Baylor band concert at Bowie High School Auditorium drew a large, enthusiastic crowd on Wednesday as the ensemble performed to a warmly received program.
Bob Welch was appointed to serve the unexpired term of Joe Hamner after his resignation. Principals and coaches were re elected for 1954 55 including Paul Taliaferro W A Greer Don Little Ruby Dickey Serena Dodd Raymond Mattingly Millard Massey E C Lemons Migs Melba Cagle Glenn Cunningham was re elected band director. Salary increases were approved for all re elected staff and the shop finishing room was converted to an office for shop and vocational agriculture teachers. The annual FFA summer inspection trip was approved and funds authorized for new window shades and related office equipment for Eva Giles the school tax assessor collector. Attendees included Supt Claude Thompson Dr E P Harris Charles Blackmon Orrie Garrett Marvin Baker and S T Hoffman.
George Dixon Faulkner 66 a Vashti resident for 60 years died Friday at a Denton daughter’s home after several weeks illness from a heart attack He was a World War I veteran He is survived by wife four sons Homer Lee Don Melvin Ray one daughter Mrs Herschel Reid and three grandchildren Funeral services were held at the First Methodist Church Vashti with burial in Vashti cemetery under Owens and Brumley directors
The annual community singing will be held Sunday at Calvary Baptist Church. Everyone is invited and the event starts at two o'clock.
Conoco selects Melvin Richardson as Bowie bulk agent for Conoco products replacing Jess Barnes. Richardson joined Continental in 1943 at Denver City and served as Bowie field clerk since 1946 before this commission appointment. He is past Bowie Lions Club president and Presbyterian elder. Holt Spain succeeds Richardson as Bowie field clerk.
Mrs S H McVicker accompanied Mrs F J Dixon and Miss Mary Brandt to Dallas on Tuesday to the Mary Shields hospital where Miss Brandt will undergo a serious eye operation.
The Bowie Chamber of Commerce invites junior and senior students of Bowie High School to submit essays on The Importance of a Chamber of Commerce in Bowie. Prizes: first $15, second $7, third $3 in each class. Entries due March 19, 1954.
The Class 28 B District Meet runs Friday night and Saturday in Bowie with finals at 8 30 and a 7 p m third place game Bellevue defends the title Antelope is round robin winner Petrolia and Bellevue are favored with Antelope for the district crown Winners advance to a best two of three series against Antelope for the regional trip to Dallas Officials Jack Taylor and Amos Kimberly from Waurika Oklahoma and Midway principal Cruse Cox are tournament director Teams: Midway Petrolia Byers Goldburg Antelope Bellevue.
U. P. Winton and sons Aubrey and Stanley suffered a car overturn while returning from the oil fields in the Denver community. The vehicle was badly damaged. Stanley sustained three fractured ribs. Mr. Winton and Aubrey had minor bruises and all are recovering at home.
Representative Tony Fenoglio named chairman of the Heart Drive for the Wichita district. He announces appointments across Montague county including Bowie Lions Club chair Norman Branson and Jaycees chair Billy Neeld, with local leaders in Nocona, Belcherville, Sunset and other towns. Wichita District vice president is Mrs. Ethel Garner of Nocona. the 1950 per capita outcome was the best in Texas.
A new home on Pecan Street is under construction by Mr and Mrs Floyd Vaught and will be ready for occupancy soon. Herman Moore is completing a remodeled dwelling on Central Street.
Mr and Mrs Leil hosted a Dallas visit over the weekend inviting Mr Jett s mother Mrs Robert Jett his brother Gramdelle Jett cousin Alton Jett and grandmother Mrs Lauch creating a small family gathering.
Fort Worth Star-Telegram ran a Sunday feature on Montague County including fifteen photographs. Images showcased Bowie hospital and city auditorium, local high school, post office and gas line plant, Johnson Poultry ranch hatchery, Texas Agricultural Experiment Station home, Angus cattle herd noted as highly numerous, Saint Jo business scene, Camp Letoli lodge, Nocona Boot Co. factory and interiors of leather goods plants in Nocona.

Several infants are noted among the admissions.

Mark High files for Bowie mayoral race with Wichita Construction Co. ownership and strong community backing. City council to issue official spring election call Monday night prompting further candidate announcements. Barbara Gray crowned Bowie Basketball Queen for 1954 with escort Temple Tucker.
Police report five teenage boys were caught stealing gasoline from a cattle truck in Bowie. Officers George Gibson and J P Hendrix detained them. They appeared before Judge Louis Hollands juvenile court and were given probation to their parents.
Next Thursday evening Montague County 4-H members convene in the District Courtroom Montague for achievement awards and medals for 36 members. Gold Star winners Jeannine Byrd Sunset and Donald Lemm on Prairie Valley receive custom 4-H boots from Miss Enid Justin of Nocona Boot Company.
Early hours report a small residence near Underwood Supply burned completely. The Lee family had recently moved to Henrietta. no occupants were inside when the fire occurred. House and contents were destroyed.
County Attorney Boyd Barten bruch reports two cases filed in county court. J. W. Nesbit passes worthless checks and Don Houston Hoyt faces driving a car while intoxicated.
A legal battle between Bluff Creek Oil Co and Whitson Co will resume in district court at Montague before Judge Louis Holland. The case, which ended in a hung jury previously, will be tried before a new jury.
Bellevue voters approve issuing 30000 dollars in school bonds to fund a home economics cottage and a vocational agriculture building. The measure passes 138 to 37.

Southside Baptist Church reports more than 50 people, young and old, accepted Christ on opening day of Freddie Gage’s revival in Bowie. The event moved to the city auditorium due to large crowds with 21 decisions in the morning and over 30 in the evening. Gage, a former Houston gang leader, emphasizes public confirmation of decisions.
The Lions club competition between the Blue Team led by Dan Manes and the Red Team captained by Dallas Kirby ended last weekend. The Blue Team won and the Red Team must host a dinner party and entertainment for the victors on Thursday night at the Lions Hall. Jack Tage oversees arrangements with assistants Dallas Kirby Mark High Dave Rhone and Norman Branson.
G A Dunson hosted relatives over Sunday including his sister Mrs Luna Underwood his niece Mrs Steve Markum and children from Lawton visiting Mr and Mrs Dunson.
Miss Frances Howard of Bud Hall Beauty Shop Bowie will compete in the state hair styling event in Dallas on February 14. Mr and Mrs L M Ashley visited Graham and Rotan last weekend. Mrs Ashley's mother Mrs Thompson accompanied them back to Bowie for a short visit.
