J O Cobb announces his bid for Montague County Treasurer. A longtime local businessman and former Nocona city commissioner outlines qualifications and plans to meet voters before the July 27 election, seeking honest efficient service.
A Montague County tax office report shows 4095 poll taxes paid for 1939, excluding 85 exemptions. The tally is from the County Tax Assessor- Collector's office, with compilation not yet fully complete.
The Ritz shows Call a Messenger with the Dead End Kids on Friday and Saturday. PreVue Sunday and Second Monday offer Stage Coach with John Wayne Claire Trevor and Andy Devine. Tuesday and Wednesday feature The Housekeeper's Daughter with Joan Bennett and Adolphe Menjou. Thursday is a double program.
The Majestic presents John Mack Brown and Fuzzy Knight in Oklahoma Frontier, with additional screenings Sunday through Tuesday of Angels With Dirty Faces starring James Cagney and Pat O’Brien and Man From Music Mountain featuring Gene Autry.
Stamps commemorating famous Americans went on sale Wednesday January 31 at the Bowie post office. The one and two cent stamps feature Washington Irving and James Fenimore Cooper with other denominations set for release on February 6 10 and 14. Also pictured are Waldo Emerson Louisa May Alcott and Samuel L Clements in sequence.
Funeral services for Malcom C. Hinton 65 were held at 4 pm Monday at Burgess Funeral Chapel with Rev B B Breitenhirt officiating Interment followed at Elmwood Cemetery under Burgess Funeral Home Pallbearers were Delbert Bacchus Cecil Allen Leonard Clark Frank Moss J O Campbell and T Chandler He died Sunday February 4 He was born in Florida and had lived in Bowie forty years He is survived by two children W E Hinton of Pampa and Mrs L D Stocking of Oakland California his mother Mrs J Hinton and a brother Ed Hinton of Jacksonville Florida
Barney R Giles announces his candidacy for a second term as Montague County Clerk and releases the 1939 financial statement showing total receipts of 10199.79 with 6182.20 in deductions and 4017.59 excess fees to the county treasury. Also notes out of town visitors Glen L Wallace and the Benson family spent the weekend in Bowie.
Boston pianist Charles Gallagher headlines a Tri Arts Series recital on Tuesday February 13 at 8 pm. He will perform Chopin Beethoven and modern works after a rise from Steinway Hall. Season tickets cost $1.50 with student admission at 25 cents per concert.
In a Tuesday assembly Bowie High honored its 1939 football lettermen with jackets. Coach Schneider received awards from Superintendent W B Alexander, followed by further recognitions for Pat Wright Thomas Ayres Garren Scroggins Loyd Price George Patterson Carl Adkins Foster Burkharte Harold Rhyne Melvin Simpson James Ditto Orville Ward Homer Jackson Alvin Fox James Wolff Alvin Roberts Mike Wright John Dixon Fay Ray Clingman C N Knightstep and mascot. Reserve letters went to Earl Hargrove Maxie Chandler Jimmie Henderson and Lawrence Ward.
Rev and Mrs Dewey Barlow formerly of Bowie are at Howard Payne College Brownwood. They made the first term honor roll as high ranking students. Rev Barlow serves as pastor of the First Baptist Church at Belknap.
Miss Avis McKelvain of Bowie High School resigns to take a position at Ranger High School. Miss Ailsey Forester of Denton will succeed her, with degrees from Texas State College for Women and several years of teaching experience.
Funeral services for James Delbert Brown 23 were held Tuesday at 3 pm at the First Baptist Church with Rev. B B Breitenhirt officiating. Interment was in Elmwood Cemetery. Burgess Funeral Home directed. Brown, killed Friday night near Del Rio when his car was struck by a truck, was born in Bowie and survived by his wife Irene Raye, his parents, a sister and a brother.
The Blackmon Implement Company of Bowie announces a big all day program for farmers on Second Monday February 12 at the store. The event features sound movers speakers and a display of the new McCormick Deering farm machinery to provide entertainment and helpful farming information.
Mr and Mrs Geo W Curlee and their daughter Miss Oleta Curlee visited in Fort Worth Sunday according to local social notes.
A deer wandered onto Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Zahn’s Mt Tabor property on December 28 and lingered for about a week then left with the cows. A bell hung from its collar. Neighbors could not identify its origin and the Zahn family, including daughters Oleta and Myla Fae, are pictured with the animal.
Allen Sims announces the Northside Montague County Singing Convention will meet at the M. E. Church in Montague Sunday afternoon February 11. The event opens at 1 o clock with a class song directed by Mr Sims and invites all song lovers to attend and participate. Several leading quartets are expected and W Allan Sims of Nocona will serve as master of ceremonies.
Fourteen volleyball teams and thirteen basketball teams compete in Bowie as Montague County hosts tournaments at Bowie High Gym Friday and Saturday starting 9 am. Awards include bronze and silver medals for sportsmanship and outstanding players, with school officials presenting trophies and a championship playoff to crown county champions.
The Fair Board convened in the Chamber of Commerce office and organized electing G. Doc Jackson as president N B Gary as vice president Mrs Gordon L Cady as vice president David Warren as treasurer and Major Ned Horton as secretary Plans for the Montague County Fair at Camp Pelham Park were laid for October 2 3 4 and 5 with midweek to weekend days and more committee meetings to follow once the president appoints them.
The Gordon Shay Dance Orchestra, nine artists strong, will perform at the American Legion Benefit Ball in Bowie at the Bowie Armory on Valentine’s night February 14 from 9 p m to 1 a m. The group is billed as the best dance orchestra in the region.
The Bowie group will hold a Sunday service February 11 at 11 a.m. at First Methodist Church with Rev. James H. Westbrook preaching. National observance runs February 8–14 with a White House broadcast featuring Roosevelt and a Scout Oath dedication. Scout Reverence Day and church sponsorship mark the week.
The Ferndale Dairy owned by Geo. F. Hoeldtke reports a major improvement including a sanitary four room milk barn of 24 by 40 feet with dust proof construction and full Grade A specifications by the State Health Department. The facility features a 125 foot gravel lane, 14 cow capacity, electric milking machines, running water and concrete floors, 260 acres of pasture, and public invitation to visit the dairy one mile and a half east of Bowie on the Brushy road.
A sing song will follow the 7 30 evening service at the First Baptist Church next Sunday night February 11. The public is invited to attend.
Deputy Collector P. O. Leslie will be at the Bowie Post Office on February 23 and 24, 1940 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to assist citizens with income tax returns. The visit aims to help filers navigate the new tax law and is offered at no cost.
Lions Club meets at City Auditorium with President M A Bryan presiding. G Doc Jackson reports for the P T A stating they aim to bid for the 1941 District Convention covering fourteen counties. The club votes to assist Bowie in hosting and to seek further cooperative aid and equipment purchases for Fair Park.
Bowie Garden Club members and interested residents are invited by Amon G. Carter of Fort Worth to a luncheon at the Fort Worth Club to launch a campaign for a national park in the Big Bend country. The program includes a style show at 11 and a film of Big Bend images. Tickets are $1.00 and reservations are via Star/Toseannas or Fort Worth Club.
Minister and Mrs. O. M. Reynolds with Mrs. B. E. Watson and Mrs. G. C. Reed attended a special service at North Side Church of Christ in Fort Worth on Monday at 10:00 AM.
