Union Texas Petroleum sells the Bowie gasoline plant in Texas to Tipperary Corp of Midland. Local plant employee says no changes are expected after the February 1, 1974 transaction. Union Texas Petroleum, a division of Allied Chemicals, has owned the plant since 1965.

The Bowie Jackrabbits beat Jacksboro 79 to 55 in Bowie on Tuesday night to extend their district win streak to seven. After a tight first quarter, Bowie surged ahead in the second to lead 37 28 at halftime and never looked back.
The Bowie Independent School District approved a 3,261 dollar bid from Robert Case for the old McCracken home on Lovers Lane as part of property improvements for a new elementary school. Case also led bids for a garage and storage building, while Allen Leak had the top bid for a butane tank. two poultry frame bids were rejected as too low. In basketball, Bowie trailed Jacksboro early but finished strong, with Darwin McKinley scoring 20 and Lee Ray Massey 18 for the Rabbit, supported by David Prater 17 and Bobby Brashear 12. Noble Tage announced his candidacy for Commissioner from Precinct 2 in the Democratic Primary on May 4, living near Bowie and employed by the school district as a bus driver.
Bowie schools face rising absenteeism as 172 students were out Monday and 191 on Tuesday. The biggest jump occurred at the Junior High, from 67 to 89 absentees, risking potential closures if trends continue.
A special film titled Pit of Dispair on drugs will be shown Friday February 8 at the Bible Baptist Church on the Montague Highway Bowie. It is part of the Revival Crusade each weeknight at 7 30 pm and seats are free for all ages.
Mayor Terry Morgan proclaims February 11 to 17 as Heart Week urging Bowie residents to back the 1974 Heart Fund campaign nationwide. He notes heart and blood vessel diseases kill over a million annually and account for 53 percent of deaths. Local volunteers join nationwide to distribute information and raise funds for research and community projects.
Filing closes February 4 sets eight candidates for three Montague County posts in the May 4 1974 Democratic primary. Incumbents Md Cooksey and Ruby Carter Sledge exit. Jewel McGregory and Homer Bell seek county treasurer and Montague clerk posts respectively. State Rep race features Joe Hanna challenging Harold Freman. unopposed candidates include Chandler Gray Starr Johnson Cecil Adkins Henry Johnson and Gene May.
Bowie police arrested two Bowie High School students, a boy and a girl, on possession of marijuana about 1:30 am Sunday. They were booked and released on their own recognizance. Earlier, about 5:20 am February 2, three men were arrested behind Frontier Western Wear and charged with attempt and possession of burglary tools. Ernest Lester Hutto, Hershel D. Pittman, and Lawrence Bill Hutto were moved to Montague County Jail in lieu of bonds. Police Chief Wasson declined to speculate if the Saturday arrests tied to recent Bowie break-ins.
Montague County and Southwestern Peanut Grower members secured a temporary victory in federal policy on peanut growing and marketing. The Department of Agriculture issued three changes to ASCS offices, including permission to sell or lease 1974 peanut allotments, a shift praised by Wayne Matthews.
Edward Bullard of Bellevue has lived 21 years with muscular dystrophy and at 31 still walks with difficulty, defying doctors who predicted rapid decline. He remains active near Bowie with his parents the Dennis Bullards as Mrs Bullard credits willpower and prayer for his condition.
The Bowie girls travel to Grandbury Tuesday February 12 to meet Comanche in a bi district game with the winner reaching the regional tournament. Comanche coached by Leta Andrews carries a 27 1 season and has two All State players from last year.
All Bowie High School Band parents are invited to a Bowie Band Parents meeting on Monday February 11 at 7 30 p m in the Band Hall. Important business topics will be discussed and attendance is urged.
