Mr Smith manages the market at Carter Whitecotton Store and Mrs Smith, a florist with much experience, is now associated with Mrs Glenice Holt in Ike s Flowers at 700 North Mills Street.
Mr and Mrs R V Garrett have returned from a trip by plane to New Orleans where they attended a national meeting of Carrier air conditioning dealers. They observed innovations and improvements in the Carrier line which Garrett Furniture Co has been handling locally.
Mr and Mrs Lindel Dodson, long residents of North Carolina, visit for a few days with Mr and Mrs H A Dodson as they prepare to relocate to Houston and establish a new home.
A Newport Good-Will Party Friday night attracted sixty attendees from Bowie and a large Newport-area turnout. The Chamber of Commerce public relations committee hosted a varied program in response to a 4-H Club Mothers invitation, with a home-cooked feed prepared by local ladies. Sam Lovette, Bowie Chamber president, presented to Mrs. James as a highlight.
Forest Faver suffered severe facial burns and died early Wednesday while part of the drilling crew at the Husfeld well five miles east of Bowie. A butane gas line reportedly blew out and ignited, catching him in flames. he received treatment at Bowie Clinic.
Watt Self announces the 1953 automobile licenses go on sale Monday in Bowie and may be obtained at the Joe Overstreet Motor Co. Mrs. Marvin London will supervise sales. Previously licenses were bought in Mrs. Eva Giles' city basement office.
Danny Deaver son of Mr and Mrs Harry J Deaver was injured Thursday morning in a collision near Alvord and transported to Bowie Hospital. A truck involved on the bridge approach to Alvord from the north left the driver uninjured and Deaver suffered cuts bruises and a leg injury.
Bowie real estate broker Howard Wheeler reports several recent deals. H. I. Jackson trades a 4 room modern house for 44 acres and a 6 room house with M. C. Covington. W. W. Wadsworth sells 174 acres to S. W. Heard, and D. L. Ethridge sells 166 acres to W. W. Wadsworth. D. M. Shelton sells a 4 room house to Ethridge. Dave Rhone sells a 4 room house with bath to H. F. Brooks. A. B. Beasley Auto Parts place transfers to A. C. Schien. J. A. Durham house near Bowie goes to Pearl Graham.
An Allen Hardware ad in Bowie announces a Babies and Children Photo Contest to be held Thursday and Friday February 19 20. A typographical error listed February 10 20 but the correct dates are February 19 and 20.
Southwestern Bell Telephone buys three lots at Tarrant and Sanders streets and awards Cassle contracts for two brick buildings. Henrietta site foundation 41.6 by 49.6 feet cost 25 000 to 30 000. Bowie plant will be over twice Henrietta size with air conditioning and serve as a hub for the cross nation repeater network.
Big State Inc a new oil well servicing company starts work on a two acre site on Montague highway near Wichita Construction. The firm owned by M C Gibbins president and Jimmy Anders vice president with Virginia Winter as secretary will employ about twenty. The unit will operate in North Texas oil fields and expands in Bowie area prospects.
Brown begins remodeling a 25 by 60 foot building adjoining his furniture store on Tarrant street. The new front will be white brick and plate glass with a 50 foot frontage, a new roof, and length extension planned. Buck Latham and Roy Campbell lead the construction as Maytag, Hotpoint, Bendix TV lines are added for service and appliances.
Constable J C Hendrix will patrol Bowie streets with POLICE lettering on his car under a county city agreement. He will be on 24 hour call, likely boosting arrests for traffic violations and disturbances. Violations include speeding, red light runs near the High School, and improper left turns with fines rising from two to twelve dollars.
Patti Mattingly of Bowie has been chosen by the Bowie Rotary Club to attend Girls State in Austin with expenses paid. Gail Wood is named as an alternate. Mattingly, daughter of Mr and Mrs R E Mattingly, is a junior and noted student. The trip is described as an unusual honor and privilege.
At a Monday night city council meeting the mayor was authorized to purchase a 1714 horsepower pump to lift Lake Bowie water for settling basins and filtering, as lake levels fall. Officials discussed wells and dam raises as backup while urging careful water use and considering bids for a new grader and dump truck.
Chester J. Brzezinski, 27, died on arrival at Bowie Hospital after an auto wreck two miles north of Ringgold. Three other occupants had minor injuries. Dorothy Hendrix of Wichita Falls was moved to General Hospital in Wichita Falls. Brzezinski, stationed at Sheppard Air Base, hailed from Bay City Michigan. His body was sent to Michigan for burial.
Harry Whitman returns to Bowie after several weeks away due to a serious illness. He spent part of the time recovering in a Houston hospital and is reported to be improving satisfactorily, bringing happiness to his friends in Bowie.
A burglary occurred Tuesday night at the Gary-Nees Lumber Co office. About $65 in cash was taken from the cash drawer. no other items missing. Entry was made by unlocking the office door. No arrests have been made.
Graham Mustangs travel to Bowie for a district contest with 25th win in sight for Bowie. The Jackrabbits seek road wins at Jacksboro Olney and Decatur after Bowie beat Graham 60 32 last weekend and Olney 49 31 last Friday as part of a low scoring, tense district race.
The First Methodist congregation learned that Rev Floyd A Boulware has been appointed to lead the church in McKinney a leading North Texas congregation He moved to McKinney and Rev Warren McSwain will join as associate pastor from Dallas after three years of service There has been strong support for the Boulware family in Bowie during their twenty months there and a warm reception is noted for their departure and arrival
