Two story home owned by Fred Hudgins on East Tarrant Street was ruined by a Thursday afternoon fire at about 4 o clock. High winds fed the blaze and the flames were beyond control before an alarm. Firemen battled the fire to keep it from spreading to nearby houses.

Funeral Services Held For Ruth Monroe
Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 30 p m at the First Methodist church for Ruth Monroe of Park Springs. Rev J H Westbrook officiated. Burial was in Sunset cemetery Burgess Funeral Home in charge Miss Monroe 45 died at the local hospital Tuesday after a long illness. A native of Kansas she had nursed several years in various hospitals. Ill health forced retirement a year ago and she lived with her mother Carrie Monroe of Park Springs. Survivors include her mother a sister Miss Monroe of Wichita Falls and two brothers Ralph Monroe of Mineral Wells and William Monroe of Park Springs.

The American Red Cross through its Civilian Protection Board activates services for the United States Office of Civilian Defense. Montague County Chapter forms a Volunteer Service committee to coordinate Red Cross work across eight districts with named vice-chairmen and officers. A Montague headquarters space is donated, and qualified first aid instructors or graduated nurses are urged to register for classes as soon as instructors and materials are available.

Bowie Observes War Time Start Monday Morning
Mayor J C McNatt announced city offices at the city auditorium will observe War Time from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Banks stores and groceries will adjust hours to customer needs. In a nationwide shift from daylight saving to War Time clocks advance one hour at 2:00 a.m. next Monday February 9 and time belts remain unchanged.

Three thousand seven hundred sixty eight poll tax receipts were issued in Montague county this year said Tax Assessor and Collector E L Anderson. Exemptions numbered 87 on the roll, a decline from 1940 but higher than last year, with statewide figures averaging between 1940 and 1941.
