Bowie and Nocona officials push a paved Bowie to Montague road through the county seat with right of way secured and funding planned via the National Recovery Work Relief and Texas State Highway Department. crews will grade culverts bridges and prepare concrete paving readiness.
Bowie citizens show Red Cross spirit in flood relief. Donations total 269.96 with 263.90 sent to Red Cross Headquarters in St. Louis and 21.50 collected locally. Roll Call Chairman Mrs. Galladay lists many contributors from businesses churches and individuals, asking to call in any omissions.
The Bowie News was sold Monday by Lam Lovette to Coy Perry of Tyler Texas. Mr and Mrs Perry are moving to Bowie this week and Perry will take over the paper and push for rapid growth week by week.
J H Monroe longtime Montague county resident died Monday after a stroke. Funeral services were held at his Bowie home with Rev B L Baits, burial in Prairie Branch cemetery eight miles west of Bowie. He taught school in Illinois and Texas before turning to farming with cabbage and cantaloupes. Born Sept 5 1864 in Fairfield Illinois, he married Jessie Mae Ayres on July 24 1895 and moved to Texas in 1897. Surviving are his widow two daughters five sons three grandchildren two sisters and two brothers.
A letter from Eric C. Howard of Chevrolet praises Montague County roads for their clear condition after a recent snow storm. Howard, zone manager, commends local maintenance crews and notes only Montague County remained clear while traveling from Wichita Falls.
Bellevue resident Mrs D W Holmes died at Bowie hospital after a bed fire she suffered fatal burns from. Her son Dave Holmes discovered the blaze and neighbors helped extinguish it. Funeral services were held at the First Methodist church with two pastors officiating and burial in Bellevue cemetery. She was widow of Dr D W Holmes who died in December. Survivors include granddaughter Dixie Holmes and a brother Charlie Brown of Park Springs.
Bowie city officials and the Bowie Independent School Board met with the Chamber of Commerce to discuss the planned purchase and reopening of the Bowie Cotton Mill. Walter Hoge of Dallas Cotton Mills Co proposed a $12 000 local subscription to show good will while financing would come from Hoge’s group with favorable taxes and rates. A favorable response is hoped and operation could begin about three weeks after closing, employing 30 to 40 workers or more with additional shifts if needed.
Miss Aileen Huth returns Monday from Amarillo where she spent the weekend. She accompanied little Dee Gill to his home there. Dee has been visiting his grandparents, Mr and Mrs Campbell Dee.
The H. Parker Grocery store across from the Post Office will receive extensive interior improvements and a new storefront by A. B. Gallia. Clarence Newsome announces a vegetable spray display counter to widen fresh fruit and vegetable selections and a cream buying station will be added soon.
Funeral services for Mrs. Laura Jane Davis of Montague County were conducted Tuesday at Salona Church with burial in Montague Cemetery. She died Tuesday morning at 4 at her son Charlie Davis’s home, after her husband’s death in 1938. Born March 22, 1861 in Cherokee County, she married at 22 and is survived by two other sons, a daughter Mrs. C. A. Thomas of Henrietta, 18 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Census data from the Department of Commerce shows 3 361 bales of cotton ginned in Montague County from the 1936 crop prior to January 16 1937, compared with 7 087 bales ginned to January 16 1936 for the 1935 crop.

The State Highway Department announced concrete paving plans for Highway 2 from 1.25 miles south of Stoneburg to Bowie and from Red River south to the Ringgold underpass a total of 3.7 miles Bids for both contracts likely in late February The paving will link at Bowie with the section merging with No 50 at Meyer Park The City Council has agreed to maintain the road from Meyer Park to the city limits
County Judge Earl C. Fitts plans to appear before the State Pension Board in Austin to advocate for Montague County pension applicants who are eligible but not receiving benefits. He requests letters from applicants with details on application date age residence and financial status to present to the board before the Legislature adjourns.
Jack Leveday known as the Jack O Diamonds will perform at the Bowie public auction day on Saturday February 13 1987. The outdoor show near central Bowie is endorsed by Mayor Fred Paire and part of a series organized by the Chamber of Commerce. The act features a straight jacket escape with rope and chains and runs about an hour starting around noon with other attractions including a Miss Bowie beauty contest.
Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce the first Bowie public auction is set for Saturday February 13 with future dates to be announced. Aimed at farmers and residents the event will be held in the old Coffield Building on Smythe Street near the Denver Railroad with an auctioneer paid by the chamber and all property brought by sellers to the highest bidder.
Homer Carrico district farm debt adjustment supervisor visited Montague Thursday to urge farmers facing foreclosure to contact the local committee. Bring a full creditor list and amounts owed including taxes. the service helps arrange fair repayment plans with creditors at no cost. The volunteer county committee includes Babe Williams, A J Fenoglio, and D L Dowd.
In Spanish Fort Texas on January 27 a new cave was exposed by recent earth collapse five miles south of town on the John Howard ranch. The opening faces a creek and measures about 50 to 60 yards long. Reported Spanish archives at Santa Fe mention a silver smelter and ore from a nearby mine, aligning with local lore of a legendary silver mine in the era of French and Spanish exploration.
