Bowie Lions Help Blind Veteran Build HAM Radio Shack

Carl Kirksey, a 24 year old blind Vietnam veteran and Minnow Ranch owner, is pursuing his HAM radio license with Lions Club support. He has operated Morse Code from his Bowie area bedroom since 1966 and will join a new radio shack funded by the club with Norman Branson aiding the project.

Power Failure Shuts Bowie Off From 10:10 To 10:50

The City of Bowie experienced a total blackout Wednesday morning as the power grid failed from 10 10 a m to about 10 50 a m An official cited a problem in the main power transformer though the exact cause was not disclosed Bowie Memorial Hospital switched to emergency power for about ten minutes before restoration.

Reeder Leads Montague Fruit Station After Randolph

Bobby D. Reeder, Auburn graduate, now directs Texas A&M University Fruit Research Demonstration Station at Montague. He succeeds A A Randolph who retired Feb 1 after 39 years with the Texas A&M System. The station studies peaches apples and pears with plans for two new projects including a peach marketing study on 62 acres.

Bowie leaders cited for Intra-Site industrial data efforts

Thirteen Bowie business and civic leaders received citations from the Texas Industrial Commission and Governor Preston Smith for significant contributions to Texas industrial development. The awards marked local involvement in building the Intra-Site computerized site selection data bank, with a detailed 88 page printout and 1444 data items for Bowie.

Jim Bowie Days Officers Elected For 1971

The first Jim Bowie Days meeting in the Gold Room of Bowie National Bank elected two year terms for officers and executive committee members. S. L. Hanson was re elected president for the fifth annual celebration to be held in Bowie on June 24 25 and 26 1971. Officers include Bob Boudreaux vice president Mrs Charles Rungells secretary Mrs M B Powell treasurer and executive committee members E L Hargood J R Matlock Mrs Bobby Read Ron Taylor and Tommy Whitecotton. A February 25 meeting at 7:00 p.m. in the Gold Room invites clubs and volunteers to participate.

Cattle rustlers hit Hodges cattle near Nocona

Journal notes theft of two cows and two calves from Walter Hodges four miles east of Nocona during Jan 28 29. Cattle loaded on a goose neck trailer and sold to a buyer. Sheriff Middleton suspects rustlers tied to earlier thefts of 20 head at Altus and 30 head in Lubbock. Hodges places value at $2000.

Jackrabbits Down Iowa Park 83 64 in Open Gym Night

The Bowie Jackrabbits defeated Iowa Park 83 to 64 in the district I AA race spoiling the Hawks inaugural gym. Coach Gayne Shelton's team holds first place with a seventh straight district win behind 18 points from Leland Stuckey and Charles Molsbee who led scorers.
